President Barack Obama touched on a variety of issues-- energy, jobs, technology, climate change and the middle class-- in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Yahoo News asked voters to respond to his speech. Here's one perspective.
COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama touched on quite a few hot-button issues in his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening.
There were many poignant topics like immigration, gun reform and the return of our troops. However, there were a couple of other issues that struck a particular chord with me.
Issue one: jobs, jobs, jobs.
As one who's been unemployed for nearly a year now, it's encouraging to know that the economy is on the mend. I've seen this in action. In recent weeks, more potential and lucrative opportunities have come my way.
In general, it's great to know that many jobs will be returning back home from overseas. The president announced that companies such as Apple, Intel and Caterpillar are committed to bringing their business back home to the United States.
Issue two: equal pay for women.
Another highpoint for me in the president's address was his urging Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. As a woman of a particular age, I've had my share of experience with the pay gap that is apparent between men and women in the workforce. It's reassuring to know that efforts toward bridging that gap are underway. These are just a couple of the issues that hit home for me. But overall, there seemed to be something in the address for everyone. The state of our union is certainly stronger. America, there are brighter days ahead.
