We have separated the key issues and put them on their own pages to make them easier to access. You will find the posts highly informative, and while here, have a look at the comments as well. There are lots of great suggestions from our readers, in fact, share your own suggestions, we would love to hear them.
Before you do though, check out the article below: it is intelligently written and the author makes some insightful points.
Fear of commitment. To some degree we've all experienced it. Relationships are a difficult thing, whether they are social relationships or business relationships, we still have some natural hesitancy to fully commit to someone or something. As you search for Internet marketing solutions, from a company or packaged as software tools and applications, a little fear is a good thing. But if your fear controls you, the right Internet marketing solutions might pass you by.
Internet marketing solutions come in many shapes and sizes, and many times they will be accompanied by Claims or, even worse, Guarantees. And, when it comes to Internet marketing solutions, Claims and Guarantees should cause more fear than Commitment does. So in the instances where these solutions seem held up by Claims and Guarantees, treat them as you would any other relationship that seems too good to be true ? with skepticism and a healthy dose of paranoia.
Common wisdom has taught us all through the years that things which seem too good to be true probably are. Internet marketing solutions are no different. A Guarantee that a company can get you a number one ranking or claim that they will put you at the top of Google within a given time frame definitely fits into this category.
Google itself tells you in their Webmaster Help Center that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking in Google. And, for better or for worse, the people who are making Google work are a lot smarter than most of us. So in these cases of Claims and Guarantees it's okay to let your Fear guide your decisions.
Which is not to say that all of those promises are blatantly false. It really could be that some of those companies have a ?system? or ?method? that will get you to the top of the search results, but, strangely enough, the guarantees don't seem to include the length of time you will remain at the top. And it probably goes without saying (but I'm going to say it anyway) that they also very specifically don't guarantee that you won't get banned.
And when we look at it this way, at least we can say that our Fear of Commitment is not completely irrational. Companies that employ unethical Internet marketing solutions can get you to the top. They can also cause irreparable harm to your business and reputation.
At the same time, if you want to succeed on the Internet you have got to face your fears, cope with your hesitations, and confront your worries. (And any other encouraging statements you feel might apply.) Because not every company is like that, and there are a number of ethical, established, and proven Internet marketing solutions, and the right Internet marketing company can help you build a powerful web presence and improve your overall marketing strategy.
A couple methods that are common practices in Internet marketing include search engine optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click (PPC). Both require skilled and knowledgeable application, but both can help you develop your online strategy and work your way up the search engine results.
However, SEO is not a quick or instant method. It takes time. And we've already discussed how the companies that promise instant SEO are justifiable sources of fear. Unfortunately a company's fear of commitment can often influence decisions when, in fact, you should be standing up to your fears. Fear enters corporate mentality when things don't progress as fast as they think it should. The wrong expectations can create the kind of fear that leads to bad decisions.
We can draw the same analogy to social relationships. How many of them have gone south because, even though both parties want the same outcome, they let their different expectations about how to achieve the end result destroy their chances of getting there. If you want to succeed it takes time. And more importantly, it takes commitment.
The moral of the story: Don't let your fear of commitment stop you from trying to find the right Internet marketing solutions. Not every relationship is going to work out on your first try, but if you really want to achieve the best possible outcome, you'll keep at it until the method and the achievement are exactly what your business needs.

Microsoft has introduced the UK?s first pop-up facility activated by anyone searching the Internet for child abuse images.
The Bing notification platform is intended to help stop anyone who may be drifting towards finding illegal content on the Internet through search engines.
When a search term is typed into Bing which indicates users are interested in child abuse images, an on-screen notification will be activated.
As well as warning users that child abuse images are illegal, the pop-up will link to the Stopitnow.org website which provides counselling for people addicted to looking at abuse images.
In a statement, Microsoft said: "Microsoft remain a strong proponent of proactive action by the technology industry in the fight against child exploitation.?
"The Bing Notification Platform is just one way Microsoft is working to tackle the scourge of online child abuse content.
"In addition, we have teams dedicated globally to abuse reporting on our services and the development of new innovations to combat child exploitation more broadly".
The Bing Notification Platform is triggered by search terms on a list provided by the The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), Microsoft said.
Andy Baker, CEOP's deputy chief executive, welcomed the creation of the device but said it was the first step towards blocking access to the illegal images and videos, and protect children.
He called on the industry to "take ownership" of the problem.
"While the Bing project isn't the whole solution, I hope it goes some way to making those who are curious about searching for indecent images think again," he said.
Research by Experian last December showed that Bing had a 4.99% share of the UK search engine market, which is dominated by Google and its 88.3% market share.
Microsoft's PhotoDNA technology is already widely used by Internet service providers and police to help prevent the proliferation of "some of the worst" illegal images online and to identify and rescue victims.
The move comes after David Cameron this week threatened to impose tough new laws on internet giants if they fail to blacklist key search terms for abuse images by October as part a crackdown on online porn.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alfonso Soriano took one look around Yankee Stadium and broke into a big, familiar smile.
"This is my house, this is my home," he said. "I'm happy I have the opportunity to come back to New York ? 10 years."
The New York Yankees reacquired Soriano in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Friday, hoping the seven-time All-Star can provide a power boost to a team that desperately needs pop.
Soriano went 0 for 5, scored a run and drove in one while batting cleanup in a 10-6 loss to Tampa Bay. He flied out with the bases loaded to end the third inning, then grounded into a forceout with the bases loaded in the ninth.
"It's a good day for me today to have a chance to put on the uniform again," he said.
"I hope we have a better chance tomorrow," he said. "It's a tough day tonight."
Soriano did more with his glove, catching a fly to start the game, making a throw to help nail a runner and running down a foul ball. It was the first time he played outfield for the Yankees.
"It's a little different, because, in the old one, I used to play second base. In the new one, I play left field now," he said.
The Cubs got minor league pitcher Corey Black and will send almost $17.7 million to the Yankees to cover much of Soriano's rich contract.
"We've obviously been trying to improve our offense, to no avail, throughout this season," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "By far, he is the best available bat to date."
Soriano outhomered the Yankees all by himself (10-8) in the four weeks prior to the deal. Overall, the 37-year-old hit .254 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs with the Cubs.
The Bronx Bombers led the majors with 245 home runs last year, but have become the Bronx burn-outs this season, ranking next-to-last in the AL with only 88. Banged up, they've played most of the year without Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
Their slump from the right side ? Soriano hits righty ? is even more acute. It's been a month since a right-hander homered for the Yankees, with Jayson Nix the last to do it on June 25.
Soriano got a big ovation when the public-address announcer read the lineups and welcomed him with "and once again a Yankee." Soriano saluted the stadium's Bleacher Creatures during their roll call, and was cheered again when his past Yankees highlights were shown on the video board.
Wearing his socks high, Soriano got an assist when his throw led to an inning-ending out in the top of the second. He led off the bottom half and flied out.
Soriano made his major league debut with the Yankees in 1999 and quickly blossomed into a rare package of speed and power. In 2002, he hit 39 homers and 51 doubles while batting .300, stealing 41 bases, scoring 128 runs and driving in 102.
"He's not the same player he used to be," Cashman said, "but he certainly provides some thunder from the right side that we've been lacking."
Cashman hinted, too, that more deals might be in the works.
The Yankees are 54-49 and in fourth place in the AL East, seven games behind division-leading Tampa Bay.
Soriano got his old No. 12, with Vernon Wells shifting to No. 22. The Yankees optioned outfielder Thomas Neal to Triple-A to make room for Soriano.
Soriano waived his no-trade clause to rejoin his old team. He was popular with teammates and fans for five seasons before New York traded him to Texas in a deal for Rodriguez.
"He's played there before," Granderson said earlier in the day at the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. "That's one thing that is a difficult thing to adjust to."
"You've got to come to New York and can you handle it, can you not? Obviously he had in the past," he said.
Soriano has never played a regular-season game at the new Yankee Stadium. He did, however, hit a home run in his lone game at the ballpark ? in April 2009, the Cubs played a pair of exhibition games at Yankee Stadium before the official opener.
Soriano has hit 389 career home runs while playing for the Yankees, Texas, Washington and the Cubs.
In the 2001 World Series, Soriano hit a home run that almost became part of the Yankees' lore. His go-ahead shot in the eighth inning off Curt Schilling in Game 7 put New York close to another championship, but Arizona rallied in the ninth to win it.
A free swinger, Soriano is known more for power than getting on base. He's drawn just 15 walks in 93 games this season.
The deal was the latest move for the Cubs before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers. This month, they traded pitcher Matt Garza to Texas and pitcher Scott Feldman to Baltimore.
Chicago was fourth in the NL Central at 45-55 when it made the deal. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Soriano impressed him, on and off the field.
"I think when I came here, for some reason I was under the impression that he would be a negative in the clubhouse and someone that was out for himself, someone who didn't play the game hard all the time. I was quickly disavowed of that notion," Epstein said.
"The first time we met with him, we asked him to work on his defense. We asked him to run the bases hard. We asked him to run balls out. We asked him to be a good example for the younger players, and we asked him to always play the game hard and to try to win the fans back over and be a leader in the clubhouse. He said, OK, and he went out and did it."
Epstein called Soriano "an ultimate pro" and said it was good to trade him now, rather than someday when he wasn't an everyday guy.
"That's always a really difficult transition for an elite player, a superstar player, in the final innings of his career. That's a difficult transition to make and it can often kind of muddy the waters a little bit," Epstein said.
"He really leaves at the right time with his head held high. And we can all be proud of the career he had as a Cub," he said.
The 21-year-old Black was 3-8 with a 4.25 ERA in 19 starts for Class A Tampa. The right-hander is averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings in his first full pro season.
Chicago will pay $17,688,524 of the $24,491,803 remaining on Soriano's $136 million, eight-year contract.
The Yankees will pay a total of $6,803,279: a prorated rate of $5 million for this year's $18 million salary and $5 million of Soriano's $18 million salary in 2014, the final season of the deal.
"I think he's a great addition. One of my favorite teammates of all-time," said Teixeira, who played with Soriano in Texas in 2004-05.
"I love the move. We need a right-handed bat, obviously. We need that thump. We need to score a few more runs, and he's one of those guys that can beat you with one swing," he said.
Soriano needs 11 hits to reach 2,000 lifetime. His career leadoff home runs are second most in history to Rickey Henderson's 81.
NOTES: The Yankees said Jeter (strained right quadriceps) is going to play a simulated game Saturday, the day he is eligible to come off the disabled list. He was set to see a doctor Friday. ... Teixeira, who's had season-ending surgery on his right wrist, expects to begin his offseason training program in November and start swinging a bat in January, both right on schedule.

The actor oversaw the civil ceremony of two male pals in Ibiza on Saturday night ? and it went down a treat.
Benedict ? previously voted The Sun?s sexiest man ? revealed it was the first time he had done it, saying he agreed because it was for an old friend.
He said: ?It?s a very private, lovely thing to be asked to do.
?Of course I?m going to make a joke after it if it goes well ? ?I do weddings. Next will be children?s parties and bat mitzvahs?.
?It?s a mainly Jewish and gay audience so hopefully they will be lenient towards me.?
Fellow wedding guest, writer Julie Burchill, raved about the wedding between the two unnamed men.
She said: ?The hotel was lush, the bridegrooms were beautiful, and the man who married them (to each other) was Benedict Cumberbatch ? so yes, it was quite a blast.?
Benedict arrived in Ibiza on Friday ? his 37th birthday ? after finding out he had been nominated for an Emmy for his role in the BBC?s Parade?s End.
And he joked that the bash would be a double celebration.
He said: ?My friend doesn?t even know this.
?I?ve been so busy trying to get luggage from one airport to another, I haven?t even gotten around to telling him. I managed to tell my mum and dad, who are over the moon.?
Benedict took the short break in between filming the new series of Sherlock, which is just about to start shooting the third episode.
He said: ?I just got the script and it?s another early birthday present, because it is amazing.
?I don?t want to hype it too much because we haven?t made it yet but what a script!
?Steven Moffat is brilliant. We shoot in about a week and a half?s time.
?We?re on Sherlock for four weeks into early September. So it?s a good time. It?s a very, very exciting time to be me. I?m really lucky.? The telly star also let slip he will be filming the series for several more years.
Benedict said: ?We?ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that.?
In a recorded message played at the US Comic Con event, he added: ?It?s been so much fun, the scripts have been such a delight. I can?t wait for you to see it.?
And he joked that he would give away how Sherlock survived ?dying? at the end of series two.
He said: ?I?m on holiday at the moment and having for pretty much two years of my life not been able to talk in detail about who I?m playing, what I?m doing, what my character does, and how he does it. I just think, ?F*** it, I?m going to tell you how Sherlock survived?.?
Starting to explain the scenario, the signal on the recorded message then starts to go, and all Benedict can be heard saying is ?cabbage,? ?teabag? and ?helicopter?.

Marlon Samuels feels Pakistan have a high-class bowling line-up ? Cricket news
Marlon Samuels, the West Indian batsman, believes that Pakistan possess a high-class bowling line-up and feels that being able to rotate the strike more often was the key for him in the fourth fixture of the on-going One Day International (ODI) series.
The cricketer from Jamaica struggled in the initial half of the series to cope with Pakistan?s bowling attack, which has some brilliant bowlers like Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan and Shahid Afridi in its ranks. The right-hander, however, rose to the occasion in the fourth match at St. Lucia and blasted a brilliant hundred to help his team post a competitive total of 261 runs on the board in their allotted 49 overs.
Pakistani batsmen however batted out of their skins and chased down the total with six wickets to spare, in what was a rain affected match.
The middle-order batsman praised the quality of Pakistan?s bowling but said that he has assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the Green Shirts' bowling.
Samuels said, ?They [Pakistan] have a high-class bowling attack but when I see a bowling attack two or three times, I sum it up properly. I've been watching a lot of tapes with Richard Berridge [video and statistical analyst] and by just summing them up, I realised who I'm going to target and who I'm not going to target and get as much singles as possible, so I batted to a plan today and it actually worked.?
The hard-hitting batsman is disappointed to have finished on the losing side but he claims that the result of the fourth match could have been different if rain had not intervened in Pakistan?s innings, which reduced their target to 189 runs off 31 overs.
?It was a lot of runs on the board and the Pakistan batting has not been clicking consistently. We know we have quality bowlers,? he added.
The final ODI of the battle between two very exciting teams is going to be played on Wednesday at the same venue, with the tourists looking to maintain their ascendency and the home team keen to square the series. The ODIs are going to be followed by a couple of T20 Internationals. ?

Service members in pre-trial confinement for serious crimes ? including rape, sexual assault and murder ? would have their military pay and allowances suspended, under legislation introduced Monday.
Withheld money could end up going to the victim of the crime under the terms of the bill, HR 2777.
The Stop Pay for Violent Offenders Act is aimed at accused service members such as Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, the suspect in the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, who has continued to receive his military pay while in custody. Hasan?s trial is now under way in Texas.
The bill?s chief sponsor, Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark., said the fact Hasan still receives pay is ?outrageous.? Griffin is an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who has been a judge advocate since 1996. He worked in the White House during the George W. Bush presidency as a special assistant for political affairs.
Under the bill, military leaders would decide whether to suspend all or just part of pay and allowances during confinement. A waiver could be requested, but would have to be done within seven days.
The bill does not specifically address what would happen to the pay and allowances of a service member with a family that depended on it as the sole source of income, but this is one of the issues that could be covered by a waiver.
A statement from Griffin?s office said a waiver also could be used in instances when a service member can provide affidavits or other evidence to show they may have been falsely accused.
The bill allows, but does not require, a formal hearing to consider waiver requests.
If a service member is acquitted of charges, or if they are convicted but their sentence is commuted or suspended, they would receive full back pay and allowances. If they are convicted, the withheld pay would be provided to the victim or victims of the crime.
The fate of the bill is unclear. It was referred to the House Armed Services Committee, which is responsible for military criminal law. However, this committee generally wraps all of its legislation for the year into a single defense policy bill, which already has passed the committee and the full House of Representatives. The bill may sit until next year before getting serious attention.
A cosponsor, Rep Frank Wolf, R-Va., said withholding pay of service members in pre-trial confinement makes sense because similar rules already apply to federal law enforcement officers in similar situations.
?This bill would correct a huge oversight that has allowed military personnel charged with a serious crime to continue to receive their pay while awaiting trial,? Wolf said.
Former Army judge advocate Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., said there is a sense of justice involved. ?How can we justify the fact that the victims of the Fort Hood attack and their families are fighting to get the benefits they deserve, while taxpayers have paid Nidal Hassan almost $300,000 to sit in a jail cell? This is unconscionable.?

I just finished the first recruitment for a local, integrated research and education project with adolescent girls. It was a fantastic experience, but the process of getting there? let?s just say there were challenges. I?m going to share some of those in a mini-series over the next few weeks to make scientific research ? particularly human subjects research ? more transparent to students and layfolk. Here is the basic outline of the posts I plan to write, which may change depending on how much I decide I need to anonymize as I go:
I?m also going to put discussion questions at the end of each post, for anyone who wants to use this as part of a professionalization or research methods course. This also might be instructive to journalists and any other folks who want to know what we do all day. If you have any questions ahead of time, or particular issues you want me to cover as I go, just comment here or contact me in the usual places (Twitter, email).
Stay tuned!

In the eyes of the United States, Canada has a drug problem.
Granted, this isn't an illegal narcotics or drug cartel problem. But in the world of international trade, the problem is pretty bad. In fact, it's serious enough to land Canada on the "Watch List" in the U.S. Trade Representative's "Special 301 Report"?a report released annually that evaluates the intellectual property rights protection and enforcement of the United States's trading partners.
So how exactly did Canada end up on this list? It boils down to this: The United States and the world's major multinational pharmaceutical companies are unhappy with the way Canada interprets its drug patent laws.
"Canada is an outlier," says Patrick Kierans, a senior partner at Norton Rose Fulbright in Toronto who has represented multinational pharmaceutical companies. "It has a higher standard for drug patents than anywhere else in the world."
Defenders of Canada's patent system insist that this is not true. Other countries also have standards that differ from that of the U.S., they say, and patent systems worldwide are far from unified. Nevertheless, Canada is on the USTR's "Watch List"?a place usually reserved for developing economies.
This is actually an upgrade from years past, when Canada sat on the U.S.'s "Priority Watch List," keeping company with such notorious big-time IP infringers as China and Russia. The basis for Canada's lowly status in the eyes of the U.S. for four consecutive years had been its copyright laws and its commercial-scale trafficking of counterfeit products. But with passage in 2012 of Canada's Copyright Modernization Act, and the introduction this year of Canada's Counterfeit Products Act, these problems are deemed well on the way to being fixed.
Canada's drug patents, however, are another story. In its report, the USTR writes that the U.S. has "serious concerns" about Canada's treatment of pharmaceutical patents. It criticizes the country's administrative process for regulatory approval of pharmaceutical products, which curbs the right to appeal. And more pointedly, it expresses concern about the impact of Canada's "heightened" utility requirement for patents.
That utility requirement, in fact, has Big Pharma up in arms. It has prompted an international trade dispute that not only challenges a sovereign nation's legal system but also could end up costing Canadian taxpayers as much as $100 million. It raises broader questions that arise in a world where the value of intellectual property is rapidly outpacing that of real property, but where patent systems still vary from country to country.
In November of last year, Eli Lilly and Company notified the government of Canada that it intends to challenge the country's standards for granting patents, claiming that they violate provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The company launched its attack after Canadian courts invalidated Lilly's patent for Strattera, a drug used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In its formal filings, it demanded $100 million in compensation from Canada, saying that is the amount the patent invalidation cost the company.
So how is an individual company, albeit the tenth-largest pharmaceutical corporation in the world, able to demand $100 million in compensation from a nation of 35 million people? The drugmaker filed what is known as an investor-state dispute, which, under provisions of some international trade treaties, allows companies to initiate challenges against foreign governments.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A child is rushed to a U.S. emergency department every 45 minutes with an injury that's related to a falling television, according to a new study.
"These are occurring primarily to younger children? When (the TVs) start coming toward them, they don't realize the danger," said Dr. Gary Smith, the study's senior author and president of the Child Injury Prevention Alliance.
Previous research has found that TVs are involved in child injuries, and that the frequency may be increasing. But according to the report published on Monday in Pediatrics, those studies were mostly small case studies, and the information was becoming out of date as the style and average number of TVs in U.S. homes has been changing in recent years.
For a more recent look at TV-related injuries in U.S. children from 1990 through 2011, Smith and his colleagues used a database of emergency department visits at a nationally representative sample of hospitals
The researchers found that about 381,000 children and teenagers were treated in U.S. emergency departments for TV-related injuries during that time.
More than half of the injuries were caused by falling TVs, another 38 percent were caused by children running into the units and about 9 percent were caused by other situations, including televisions being moved from one location to another.
The majority of the injuries were to boys and about 64 percent of the injuries were to children less than five years old. Two-year olds were the age group most likely to be hurt. There were six deaths.
The head and neck area was the most common site of injury, and cuts, bruises and concussions the most common types of injury.
The overall rate of TV-related injuries held steady at about 17,000 per year over the 22-year period.
The percentage of injuries related to "striking" TVs fell dramatically over time, however, while the rate of injuries caused by falling TVs doubled from about 1 per 10,000 children in 1990 to about 2 per 10,000 children in 2011.
Although homes have more TVs now than years ago, Smith said that doesn't explain why injuries related to falling TVs were increasing but not injuries from running into the units.
"What we're finding is when those second and third TVs are being brought into these homes, the (older and bulkier units) are being moved and put in other parts of the home that are unsafe," said Smith, who is also director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
For example, as more people buy flat-screen TVs, their older and bulkier units are being put in bedrooms or playrooms on top of dressers, bureaus, drawers and armoires, which may tip over because they were never designed to support TVs.
"TVs need to be strapped or anchored to the wall. I think that's our biggest problem right now. Many parents are unaware that TVs can be so life threatening if it topples over and falls on top of your child," Smith said.
Dr. Marvin Platt, who has researched TV-related injuries but wasn't involved in the new research, said he hopes pediatricians take an active stance on this issue.
"I think there needs to be much more education to the public and I feel that can be done. Secondly, I think there needs to be legislation or regulation to have TVs secured to surfaces," said Platt, a retired forensic pathologist and pediatrician in Akron, Ohio.
"Unless they take measures to bolt these things down, they're going to fall," he said.
Smith said the new study may underestimate the number of TV-related injuries, because it only captured injuries seen in emergency departments. There may be some injuries that were treated at home or in doctors' offices.
The ER data used by the researchers also wouldn't record most deaths related to falling TVs, though Smith's team does note in its report that according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 215 children died of injuries caused by a falling TV between 2000 and 2011.
"If you have a TV at home - it doesn't matter if it's a flat screen or (cathode ray tube model) - that TV must be anchored to a wall," Smith said, adding that people can find additional information on his organization's website preventchildinjury.org.

Horses and humans interact in a wide variety of sport competitions and non-competitive recreational pursuits, as well as in working activities such as police work, agriculture, entertainment, and therapy. Horses were historically used in warfare, from which a wide variety of riding and driving techniques developed, using many different styles of equipment and methods of control. Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. Humans provide domesticated horses with food, water and shelter, as well as attention from specialists such as veterinarians and farriers.
Specific terms and specialized language are used to describe equine anatomy, different life stages, colors and breeds.

Many genes that create horse coat colors and patterns have been identified. Current genetic tests can identify at least 13 different alleles influencing coat color, and research continues to discover new genes linked to specific traits. The basic coat colors of chestnut and black are determined by the gene controlled by the Melanocortin 1 receptor, also known as the ?extension gene? or ?red factor,? as its recessive form is ?red? and its dominant form is black. Additional genes control suppression of black colour to point coloration that results in a bay, spotting patterns such as pinto or leopard, dilution genes such as palomino or dun, as well as graying, and all the other factors that create the many possible coat colors found in horses.

The horse skeleton averages 205 bones. A significant difference between the horse skeleton and that of a human is the lack of a collarbone?the horse?s forelimbs are attached to the spinal column by a powerful set of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that attach the shoulder blade to the torso. The horse?s legs and hooves are also unique structures. Their leg bones are proportioned differently from those of a human. For example, the body part that is called a horse?s ?knee? is actually composed of the carpal bones that correspond to the human wrist. Similarly, the hock contains bones equivalent to those in the human ankle and heel. The lower leg bones of a horse correspond to the bones of the human hand or foot, and the fetlock is actually the proximal sesamoid bones between the cannon bones (a single equivalent to the human metacarpal or metatarsal bones) and the proximal phalanges, located where one finds the ?knuckles? of a human. A horse also has no muscles in its legs below the knees and hocks, only skin, hair, bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the assorted specialized tissues that make up the hoof.

The horses? senses are based on their status as prey animals, where they must be aware of their surroundings at all times. They have the largest eyes of any land mammal, and are lateral-eyed, meaning that their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads. This means that horses have a range of vision of more than 350x, with approximately 65x of this being binocular vision and the remaining 285x monocular vision. Horses have excellent day and night vision, but they have two-color, or dichromatic vision; their colour vision is somewhat like red-green colour blindness in humans, where certain colors, especially red and related colors, appear as a shade of green. Their sense of smell, while much better than that of humans, isn?t their strongest asset; they rely to a greater extent on vision.
A horse?s hearing is good, and the pinna of each ear can rotate up to 180x, giving the potential for 360x hearing without having to move the head. Noise impacts the behavior of horses and certain kinds of noise may contribute to stress: A 2013 study in the UK indicated that stabled horses were calmest in a quiet setting, or if listening to country or classical music, but displayed signs of nervousness when listening to jazz or rock music. This study also recommended keeping music under a volume of 21 decibels. An Australian study found that stabled racehorses listening to talk radio had a higher rate of gastric ulcers than horses listening to music, and racehorses stabled where a radio was played had a higher overall rate of ulceration than horses stabled where there was no radio playing.

Horses are prey animals with a strong fight-or-flight response. Their 1st reaction to threat is to startle and usually flee, although they will stand their ground and defend themselves when flight is impossible or if their young are threatened. They also tend to be curious; when startled, they will often hesitate an instant to ascertain the cause of their fright, and may not always flee from something that they perceive as non-threatening. Most light horse riding breeds were developed for speed, agility, alertness and endurance; natural qualities that extend from their wild ancestors. However, through selective breeding, some breeds of horses are quite docile, particularly certain draft horses. Horses are herd animals, with a clear hierarchy of rank, led by a dominant individual, usually a mare. They are also social creatures that are able to form companionship attachments to their own species and to other animals, including humans. They communicate in various ways, including vocalizations such as nickering or whinnying, mutual grooming, and body language. Many horses will become difficult to manage if they are isolated, but with training, horses can learn to accept a human as a companion, and thus be comfortable away from other horses. However, when confined with insufficient companionship, exercise, or stimulation, individuals may develop stable vices, an assortment of bad habits, mostly stereotypies of psychological origin, that include wood chewing, wall kicking, ?weaving?, and other problems.
In the past, horses were considered unintelligent, with no abstract thinking ability, unable to generalize, and driven primarily by a herd mentality. However, modern studies show that they perform a number of cognitive tasks on a daily basis, meeting mental challenges that include food procurement and social system identification. They also have good spatial discrimination abilities. Studies have assessed equine intelligence in the realms of problem solving, learning speed, and knowledge retention. Results show that horses excel at simple learning, but also are able to solve advanced cognitive challenges that involve categorization and concept learning. They learn from habituation, desensitization, Pavlovian conditioning, and operant conditioning. They respond to and learn from both positive and negative reinforcement. Recent studies even suggest horses are able to count if the quantity involved is less than four.
Domesticated horses tend to face greater mental challenges than wild horses, because they live in artificial environments that stifle instinctive behavior while learning tasks that aren?t natural. Horses are creatures of habit that respond and adapt well to regimentation, and respond best when the same routines and techniques are used consistently. Some trainers believe that ?intelligent? horses are reflections of intelligent trainers who effectively use response conditioning techniques and positive reinforcement to train in the style that fits best with an individual animal?s natural inclinations. Others who handle horses regularly note that personality also may play a role separate from intelligence in determining how a given animal responds to various experiences.

JERUSALEM (JTA) ? Three years after leaving Israel, Burger King is in talks to open franchises in the country.
Burger King is expected to open 12 restaurants in its first year back in Israel and 15 the following year, according to the Israeli business publication Calcalist.
The desire to return to Israel stems from ownership changes in the international company, according to Calcalist.
Burger King?s 55 franchises in Israel closed in the summer of 2010 and reopened as the Israeli franchise Burger Ranch. Israelis appear to prefer an Israeli-style burger to Burger King?s American-style Whopper, the company said then in a statement.
Starbucks, Wendy?s and Dunkin? Donuts are other American franchises that did not make it in Israel.
Burger King first entered the Israeli market in 1993.

The state's highest court won't hear an appeal in former Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman's dispute with the borough and its police department, which means the lengthy and costly legal battle could be nearing an end.
The Supreme Court on Thursday denied appeal petitions filed by both Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin and Hoffman, court records show. Hoffman moved out of the borough last month and has since been replaced.
Hoffman attorney Jeffrey Dimmich declared it a "complete victory" for his client. Hoffman had appealed to the state Supreme Court, partly in an attempt to recover some of his mounting legal fees in the case. The case cost the borough and Hoffman each in excess of $100,000.
"We will now have to wait until the order is final and then the issue of attorney fees for Hoffman will be handled by [Lehigh County Judge Michele A. Varricchio]," Dimmich said
Commonwealth Court judges remanded to Lehigh County Court the issue of attorney fees and claims against the borough. Varricchio will decide on that issue.
Martin said he was disappointed the Supreme Court didn't consider the case.
"I think it's bad public policy to have a mayor without any law enforcement training insinuating himself into the operations [of a police force]," he said.
"We knew it was a long shot," he added of the appeal. "We took it and they decided it and that's their prerogative."
The Supreme Court filings came after a Commonwealth Court ruling in January that upheld a series of decisions by Varricchio, who ruled that the mayor is the chief law enforcement officer of the borough and is entitled to unrestricted access to the police station and its files.
Martin, who intervened in the case between the borough and mayor, asked for a clarification of the Commonwealth Court ruling. He said a portion of the decision related to information the mayor is entitled to see was "confusing and in need of clarification." Martin has argued that a mayor should not be entitled to see information related to undercover investigations or intelligence information.
Dimmich claimed in a court filing that Hoffman should be entitled to more than $4,000 that Borough Code allows him to receive from the borough in legal cases that pit him against Borough Council.
Dimmich also claimed that the dispute was "self-created" by council.
All of the court filings stem from a legal battle that began in 2010, shortly after Hoffman took office.
Hoffman filed a lawsuit against the borough and police department, claiming they were interfering with his authority under state law to be head of the department. Police Chief Edward Harry Jr. denied some of that access, in part because of comments Hoffman allegedly made before he was elected.
Police officers have said Hoffman commented that he was going to "get" the officer who arrested his son, Jason, on a drunken driving charge in 2009, a claim the mayor has denied.
Hoffman, before his move to Virginia, had said he was willing to come back to Pennsylvania to continue to fight the case if necessary.
He resigned in late June after selling his borough home, saying after announcing that he was leaving town that he endured a "miserable three years" as Macungie's mayor.
This week, council named his replacement, tapping Democrat Gary Cordner as interim mayor. Cordner will serve the remainder of Hoffman's four-year term, which expires at the end of the year.
Cordner and Republican Ronald Conrad are seeking a four-year seat in the November election. The winner will take over in January.
