Julianne Hough Looks Gorgeous, Reveals Tom Cruise Lap Dance in Interview Magazine

Dancing with the Stars pro turned singer-actress Julianne Hough reveals, in the new issue of Interview magazine, her amazing good looks. And some fun facts about Rock of Ages, including her giving Tom Cruise a lap dance.

In a scene that was cut, tragically.

During the interview, Hough explained that Ryan Seacrest, 37, calls the role “a little sexy,” which prompted the details on the lap dance in question.

Julianne Hough, UnderwearJulianne Hough in Interview Magazine

“There was one scene we did that ended up not making it into the film, but it was a really great number - ’Rock You Like a Hurricane,” Hough said.

“It was in the strip club, and I gave Tom a lap dance in the scene.”

So, why exactly was it cut?

“The movie flowed better without it, so I understand, but at the same time, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I had to do that, and it’s not even in the movie?”‘

Not that everyone will be disappointed.

“I was in a bra and underwear," she admits, "and was basically giving him a lap dance, so my father will probably like that scene getting cut out.”

Eagle Scout challenges Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy with petition

Eagle Scout Zach Wahls challenged the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy today when he delivered three boxes of petitions demanding change, signed by more than 275,000 people.

Wahls, 20, presented the petitions during the Boy Scouts' National Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., on behalf of Jennifer Tyrrell, an Ohio mom who was removed as the den leader of her 7-year-old son's Cub Scout troop in April because of her sexual orientation. The Boy Scouts are the parent organization of the Cub Scouts.

Wahls is the author of "My Two Moms" and a video of his three-minute speech before Iowa legislators urging them not to pass a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage and civil unions went viral in February.

The Change.org petition called for Tyrrell's reinstatement and a change in policy for the organization.

"It is time for the Boy Scouts of America to reconsider its policy of exclusivity against gay youth and leaders," the petition reads. "Please sign this petition to call for an end of discrimination in an organization that is shaping the future."

The petition has garnered support from celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Julianne Moore, Ricky Martin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and "Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson among others.

After delivering the petitions, Wahls met privately with three Boy Scout representatives.

"It went well. It was an honest conversation, but a productive one," Wahls told ABCNews.com today. "The fact that the meeting happened is a really positive indicator."

Wahls said the Boy Scout leaders were "receptive" of his ideas and he believes the conversation is a positive first step in overcoming cultural prejudices.

"It's a dialogue that continues to be difficult for many people," he said. "But the members of our community are the ones that pay the price, not the organization as a whole."

Following the meeting, the Boy Scouts released a statement that said they have "no plans" to change their policy.

"The Boy Scouts of America teaches its members to treat those with different opinions with courtesy and respect at all times," Deron Smith, BSA director of public relations, said in a statement. "Today, Scouting officials accepted signatures from an online petition and shared the purpose of its membership policy."

"Scouting maintains that is youth development program is not the appropriate environment to introduce or discuss, in any way, same-sex attraction," he wrote. "Parents and caregivers should have the right to decide when and how to discuss the issue with their children."

Wahls is not deterred by the statement.

"President Obama said the exact same thing up until the day he endorsed same-sex marriage. I expect we'll see a similar progression from the Boy Scouts," he said. "Obviously, this is a very long-standing policy and I don't think it we'll see a change today, this week or even this year. But over the coming months, we'll continue to take steps in this evolution."

Tyrrell, 32, was not in Florida for the delivery of the petitions, but will join Wahls at the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco on Saturday. She told ABCNews.com she is grateful for all of the support.

"I didn't expect it, of course," she said. "It's been humbling. It's been terrifying. It's been exciting. It's been a whole bag of mixed emotions."

Tyrrell started the petition when she was removed from her year-long position as den leader because of her sexuality.

"I actually felt devastated. I was heartbroken. I cried a lot. I still feel sad about it a lot," she said. "It's 2012 and nobody deserved to be treated like that."

She said that all of this is mostly sad for her 7-year-old son Cruz who is missing out on all of the positive elements of the Boy Scouts.

When asked if Cruz understands what is happening and that one of his moms has become the face of a movement, Tyrrell said, "To the extent of his ability, he knows what's going on. He's kind of like, 'Boo the Boy Scouts.' He doesn't understand discrimination. He's never been taught that. He doesn't see people by the color of their skin or who they love. He just loves everyone and doesn't understand how others couldn't."

Hopes for US recovery, China stimulus help markets

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets rose Tuesday on signs of improvement in the U.S. housing market and on hopes China will act to support growth in its economy, the world's second-largest.

A survey by S&P/Case Shiller showed home prices rose in major U.S. cities in March for the first time in seven months. Combined with record low mortgage rates and a steady improvement in the labor market, the report suggested that the U.S. property market ? which was at the heart of the global financial crisis in 2008 ? is strengthening.

"With the economic recovery now on firmer ground, we see no reason to alter our view that U.S. house prices have now found a floor," said Ed Stansfield, chief property economist at Capital Economics.

The figures helped offset the impact of a more downbeat report showing U.S. consumer optimism fell in May to the lowest in eight months. The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index fell to 64.9 points, below analyst expectations.

Also helping sentiment was the expectation that Chinese authorities would relax monetary policy and announce fiscal stimulus measures to offset slowing economic growth.

China is a manufacturer and exporter of consumer goods and closely linked with industries in the U.S. and Europe. Investors have in recent weeks been worrying that its economy may slow down sharply, hurting other markets.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 closed 0.7 percent higher at 5,391.14 while Germany's DAX rose 1.2 percent to 6,396.84. The CAC-40 in Paris rose 1.4 percent to 3,084.70.

The euro, however, fell 0.5 percent to $1.2476 after reports that Egan Jones, a minor credit rating agency, downgraded Spain's sovereign debt to B from BB-.

Wall Street rose after a three-day weekend for Memorial Day holiday, with the Dow gaining 0.5 percent to 12,527.98 and the S&P 500 rising 0.5 percent to 1,324.55.

Earlier, markets had been unsettled by concerns that Spain's ailing banking sector might worsen the European debt crisis.

The country's banks are sitting on massive amounts of soured real estate investments. That has led to the recent nationalization of Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, which revealed last week it needed more money than expected ? ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) ? in state aid to shore itself up.

Investors fear that the Spanish government, which is already under pressure to lower its debts at a time of recession and record-high unemployment, will be overwhelmed by the cost of saving the country's banking sector.

Those concerns kept pressure on Spain's Ibex, which was down 2.3 percent, with shares in Bankia dropping another 16.2 percent.

The latest bad news to hit the country was a report showing retail sales were down 9.8 percent in April in year-on-year terms, more than double the 3.8 percent fall posted in March.

The figures underlined the brutal impact that government austerity cuts and economic uncertainty are having on households. They also bolster the case for Europe to find new ways to bolster economic growth, though leaders disagree over how to achieve that.

Years of financial and economic uncertainty ? first in the global credit crunch and now in the debt crisis ? have hammered public confidence in the future of European integration, according to a survey by Pew Research across eight European Union countries, including five that use the euro.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those headwinds, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to abandon the single currency.

Europe's debt crisis will remain a dominant theme for markets for weeks to come as investors gauge the likelihood that Greece might leave the eurozone after elections on June 17. If Greeks vote for parties that support the country's bailout terms, ensuring a continued flow of rescue loans, the country will hope to stay in the eurozone.

The pro-bailout parties hold a narrow lead, according to the latest polls, but uncertainty over the ultimate outcome of the elections will keep market sentiment fragile and prone to swings in mood.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to close at 8,657.08 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.4 percent to 19,055.46. South Korea's Kospi climbed 1.4 percent after being closed Monday for a public holiday while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.2 percent.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 33 cents to $90.53 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Introduction to Financial Ecology? ? socializing finance

May 28, 2012

Suppose you wanted to teach a sociology of finance course to undergraduates. Before teaching them about specific theories, traditions, or histories in the sociology of finance (SSF or New Economic Sociology or political economy, say), you want to introduce modern finance empirically. What is finance? What is it made of? Who are the most important actors, the most important kinds of firms, etc.? What professions influence finance (from law to engineering)? Which regulators are important globally or domestically? Etc.

My question is: how would you teach this material? And most importantly, are there any particularly excellent sources (textbooks, articles, etc.) that do a good job of simply laying out the field of finance in its messy details, but in a level accessible to someone whose existing exposure to modern finance is limited? To put it another way, what I am looking for is an introduction to the ecology of finance aimed, or at least accessible to, non-specialists.

Study: One in 10 U.S. Veterans Has No Health Insurance - New ...

One in 10 veterans under the age of 65 is currently living without health insurance and reports not using Veterans Affairs (VA) health care, according to a new study examining health care access for retired service members.

The report, which also found a high number of veterans? family members living without insurance, notes such rates are highest in states that have made little progress in implementing provisions of the Affordable Care Act. These states account for 40 percent of uninsured veterans.

Despite having higher rates of health insurance than the general population, ?an estimated 1.3 million veterans lack health insurance coverage and do not use VA health care,? noted the study?s co-author, Genevieve Kenney, who points out a majority of uninsured veterans tend to be younger and less well educated.

The study, released Thursday by the non-partisan Urban Institute, comes as the nation awaits a Supreme Court decision on the fate of the ACA. A ruling is expected in June.

If upheld, about 630,000 uninsured veterans under the age of 65 would likely qualify for Medicaid, the state and federal health insurance program for the poor, which would be expanded under the law. Under current law, just one in 10 qualifies for the program.

Another 520,000 uninsured vets would be eligible for subsidized health coverage in new marketplaces, or insurance exchanges, mandated under the ACA. This would also benefit close to 80 percent of the nearly one million family members of uninsured vets.

There are currently around 13 million veterans between the ages of 19 and 64 living in the United States. Some 17 percent of those without insurance report suffering from service-related disabilities or functional limitations, while 41 percent say they have unmet medical needs. Another 34 percent say they have delayed care due to cost, the report notes.

With two wars winding down in Afghanistan and Iraq, the findings also showed that one in four uninsured veterans served between September 2001 and 2010.

The report is the first to examine rates of health insurance among veterans on both the national and state level. There are several states with more than 14 percent uninsured ? Louisiana, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. On average, uninsurance is higher among those that have ?taken only limited steps toward implementing exchanges under the ACA,? according to the report.

Texas and California are each home to more than 100,000 uninsured vets, the study found.

While the authors of the report say more aggressive implementation of the ACA would help ameliorate the problem, J.P. Tremblay, spokesperson for the California Department of Veterans Affairs, says the real issue is making sure vets understand the benefits available to them through the VA system.

?Many don?t know,? says Tremblay, who explains that when returning home, soldiers ?get a week of transition services? ? meaning they sit in a class while someone lectures them on accessing benefits. The problem, he says, is that most are only thinking of one thing, and that?s ?getting home.?

Tremblay says the ACA is in many ways modeled after the VA system, which he describes as ?top notch,? adding that all returning vets are guaranteed coverage for the first five years. The challenge, he says, is ?getting into the system.?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other maladies common to service members can take time to manifest, he explains, so many put off registering. When they do experience symptoms, it can exacerbate frustrations of trying to register for the first time.

Reports of lengthy waits and delayed process times for claims have become fairly common since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Urban Institute report also suggested that proximity to a VA center could be one of the reasons explaining whether or not service members accessed the health care that was available to them. Expanded coverage through the ACA, authors contend, would provide a greater availability of options for veterans and their family members.

They do note, however, that with increased options come problems of fragmented care. Those accessing both VA and non-VA coverage, for example, may need ?targeted assistance? to help them make informed choices that do not disrupt the care they have been receiving.?

With uninsured veterans accounting for roughly 5 percent of the nation?s 47 million people without health insurance, the study concludes, ?more aggressive ACA implementation? will help ensure they get the care they need.

Crisis draws squatters to Spain's empty buildings

SEVILLE, Spain (Reuters) - Sleeping on inflatable mattresses with just a few boxes to hold their belongings, 32 families have occupied an empty new apartment block in Seville in southern Spain to put a roof over their heads after being thrown out of their own homes.

They share a single cooker and a cheap brown sofa left behind by the builders. To others facing the prospect of living on the streets the families are living in luxury and they have set up a 24-hour watch to keep hopefuls out.

Squatting is rare in Spain but it has been on the rise because the 2008 property crash left thousands of buildings empty and the economic recession has led to soaring unemployment and home eviction rates.

Public spending cuts as the government tries to prevent Spain sinking further into the euro zone debt crisis have made the situation for many people even worse and new groups have sprung up to protest or help people improve their lives.

"We're not anti-establishment. We just don't want to live in the streets. With so many buildings like this and so many normal people facing eviction, we hope we inspire others to do the same," says unemployed squatter Irma Blanco, 35.

The building, a short walk from the centre of the capital of the Andalucia region, was finished just three years ago and has double glazing and new wooden floors but the developer was not able to sell the apartments.

The occupation was organised by members of the M-15 group which has spotted an opportunity in the country's estimated o ne million empty homes for the growing number of homeless.

M-15, also known as the Indignados (Indignant) protest movement born on May 15, 2011 when hundreds of thousands of people occupied main squares around the country to demand change.

The Indignados' public protests have largely died down, but M-15 activists have formed neighbourhood assemblies all over Spain that help in a variety of causes, including blocking court-ordered evictions of mortgage defaulters.

"I have always fought for people's right to a home, which I think is a fundamental right," said Antonio Buenavida, 57, an M-15 activist who helped set up the squat.

SYMPATHY

Once left over construction material was cleared from the corridors, the families moved in all together at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday, and sat in the dark for three days, blinds drawn, worried they would be evicted.

When no one came, they opened the shutters and hung out sheets on their terraces with painted slogans such as "fair housing."

Andalucia is home to a quarter of Spain's 5.6 million unemployed. Known for olive groves, beaches and bull fighting, the region is also increasingly notorious for its poverty.

The families seem to have found some sympathy among the local population.

A spokeswoman for Seville city hall said the government would not evict unless the building's owner, Maexpa, lodged a complaint. Reuters was not able to reach Maexpa for a comment.

And the inhabitants say that the police have helped to protecting them from other would-be squatters.

Ibercaja, the savings bank that funded the development said it was also not planning to take any action.

"The building's ... owned by Maexpa. What they chose to do about the squatters is up to them," said a spokeswoman for Ibercaja, the savings bank that funded the development.

She said Maexpa had stopped paying its loan for the building project but that Ibercaja has not started legal proceedings.

Spanish banks have become one of the economy's main problems, saddled with an estimated 184 billion euros worth of repossessed property that they cannot sell and loans to developers.

The government announced its largest ever bank rescue on Friday for Bankia and economists say there is little hope of Spain emerging from recession until many banks have cleaned up their balance sheets so they can restart lending.

DIGNITY

Given the grim scenario for the economy, M-15 is looking at ways to move other homeless people into thousands of other unoccupied housing units in Seville.

During a Thursday night meeting at the squat, a long list was drawn of other families keen to be included in the next occupation.

"These are wonderful people. It's beautiful that there's a little humanity in the world. I don't want riches. I'm a simple woman. I just want a little dignity," said Anika 35, who moved in to the apartment with her son and daughter, 18 and 6.

Like other Spaniards Anika is disgusted with the government for cutting education and health spending while spending tens of billions of euros to rescue banks saddled with bad debt from the real estate crash.

She lost her job last November, a full time position in the hotel industry which paid 600 euros a month, and since has only scraped some money to feed herself and her children through cleaning or posting flyers on cars.

Her rent, before she was thrown out, was 500 euros a month.

In more than 1.7 million homes in Spain every family member is out of work and courts evicted 100,000 mortgage defaulters in 2010, four times the number three years earlier.

"This place has given us hope. Neither my husband nor I will die in the street," said Ana Lopez, 77.

She lives in the pilot flat, set up to show prospective buyers, which now serves as a communal kitchen because it boasts the only stove and refrigerator in the block.

Lopez and her ailing 70-year-old husband claim just over a 1,000 euros a month in pensions, though with an increasingly reliant extended family, the aid is stretched thin.

"With that we take care of our two children, who have families of their own and three children between them. None are working and both families have also found flats here," she said.

How To Have The Perfect Wedding Day

Wedding planning, when not handled correctly, can drain all the joy out of the days preceding your ceremony. Here are a variety of tips that are designed to get you what you need for your wedding.

If you have the time for it, do something fun and relaxing just for yourself on your wedding morning A great massage would be one way to make sure you feel your best on your wedding day.

As you seek out a dress, don't just think about the kind of dress you'd like to wear, also consider what sorts of dresses will flatter your body. If you are not very tall, steer clear of getting your dress altered, just go to the petite section. You will notice the difference and your guests will too!

Don't be fearful about letting other people help out with segments of planning your wedding. Your wedding is a major life event, so it's natural to want to be part of the entire process to make sure it goes right. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

Rent diamonds on your wedding day. These can help you look amazing on a budget. You will be able to choose between many different kinds of jewelery while sticking to your budget.

Big centerpieces are overpriced and overrated, often taking more from table conversation than they add to it. As an alternative, try selecting a simple but elegant centerpiece that isn't too large or overwhelming. You will then allow people to have a conversation without unnecessary distractions; this will bring your guests closer.

If you have ample time but a small budget, save some money by printing your wedding invitations yourself. You can purchase invitation kits for a small cost, much cheaper than ordering invitations, and they let you personalize everything on your cards from the color to the font and wording.

See if you can find a willing helper who can assist you with looking after your equipment and moving it when necessary. Your assistant can also be useful when it comes to group shots and rounding up all the required family members.

If you want your colorful wedding cake as the focal point of your reception, present it on a coordinating fabric tablecloth. Whether you choose patterns or solids, the fabric should add another dimension of visual interest and help to tie your wedding cake in with your wedding theme.

It is a good idea to hear the speeches of those who will be speaking at your wedding so you know that their comments will be appropriate. Many generations and people of differing viewpoints will attend your wedding, so your speech makers need to make their speeches geared to everyone and not just play to their own friends.

Take the time to carefully consider the most important aspect of the wedding, your future spouse. Absolutely do not make this life-changing decision in haste. Weigh everything you know about your loved one, and think about everything involved with living with this person forever.

Start a savings account that is intended just for your wedding expenses. Establishing a budget on paper and delegating how much to spend in each area will help you stick to the budget. If you're not ready to get married, start saving now, so you can use the money later.

A professional wedding consultant can make the planning of your wedding go more smoothly, as well as providing assistance on the big day itself. Weddings can sometimes be stressful when things do go wrong. If you have a professional, they can handle the little details and any emergencies that might come up. This will allow you, your spouse-to-be, your family and your guests to simply enjoy your special day.

Apply for a credit card that has a rewards program before paying for event services. Weddings can be expensive and having a card with miles and deals is vital. All of these charges add up quickly when paying for a wedding, allowing you to rack up some great rewards in the process.

Make certain to send an online itinerary to your guests with the events, so they know how they should schedule their day and which part they are looking to attend. Include relevant information about the rehearsal dinner, reception and so on, so that each person knows where to be.

Let your control issues go, and allow your friends and family to get involved in the planning of your wedding. It is natural to want to participate in all aspects of planning, especially since your wedding is such a personal affair. However, there may be a point when you are in over your head, and in such cases, it is important to recognize that it might be better to trust a more qualified professional to do the job properly.

If you want to avoid allergies or the expense of floral arrangements, consider using potted plants to decorate your wedding space. You also have several choices for pot decorations. For example, two common pot options are ceramic pots and terracotta stoneware. You can also decorate the pots yourself by painting them, or dressing them up with ribbons. With the potted plants, you can either take them home for yourself, or you can go ahead and let guests take them home as wedding gifts.

One key consideration when setting up seating for your wedding meal is to avoid having an odd number of guests at any table. If you put people of the same age together at tables they will have more to talk about.

Divide your table settings evenly. Don't put an odd number of people at any table. Group people at tables by age so that common ground for conversations exists.

If you are planning an outdoor reception, make sure that your caterer is aware of this. Some foods are not suitable for an outdoor reception because they may not keep well or they may fly away in heavy wind gusts. You may consider using decorative covers for your dishes. If you feel a need to have cold drinks present, a mini refrigerator should work nicely.

Apply this advice for a well planned wedding that gives you enough time to relax and remember why you are getting married in the first place. Your wedding will be a day you will never forget, so make it what you want it to be.

(AP) ? Chris Sale nearly made White Sox history in a dominating victory.

Sale struck out a career-high 15, Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer and Chicago extended its winning streak to six games with a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

"A special day ... it was awesome," said Sale, who is from nearby Lakeland. "It's nice, especially growing up and being kind of a Tampa Bay Rays fan. My uncle brought me here to the first game. It was the day after my birthday."

Sale (6-2) gave up one run, three hits and walked two in 7 1-3 innings while finishing one strikeout shy of the team record. Jack Harshman struck out 16 against Boston on July 25, 1954.

"I didn't know what the record was," Sale said. "That's something I'm not really worried about. I knew I had quite a few there late in the game, but it's the same thing just like any other day. You go out there and you try not to focus on all the external stuff that might get in the way of you doing your job."

Sale struck out his 15th batter, Jose Molina, with a runner on third and two outs in the seventh. He retired his final batter, Rich Thompson, on a grounder to lead off the eighth.

"You know what, that guy could have punched out a lot of teams 15 times," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "His stuff was that good. The entire package, what he did, was good. A lot of awareness out there."

The 15 strikeouts was the most ever by one pitcher at Tropicana Field.

"He's special," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think that's what you're seeing is him being able to kind of manage the game and go for a strikeout and get ahead and all of those things."

After Jesse Crain got the final two outs in the eighth, Addison Reed pitched the ninth for his fifth save and complete a three-hitter.

Chicago took a 2-1 lead during the sixth when Gordon Beckham singled and scored on Dunn's 16th homer. Dunn has gone deep 11 times in May.

"You get some guys on and he can do a lot of damage," Ventura said. "It was just one of those that he hits perfect, and he probably didn't even feel it. He hit it that good."

Matt Moore (1-5) allowed two runs and four hits over seven innings for Tampa Bay. The left-hander, who given up 19 runs over 19 2-3 innings in his previous four starts, struck out 10 and walked one.

"That's two of the best young pitchers that have come through in a long time," Dunn said. "You had to kind of focus and not get caught up in what they were doing. Those two guys are something special, man. For sure."

The White Sox had scored at least nine runs in each of their previous four games.

Chicago's Paul Konerko, who had his average drop four point to .395, went 1 for 4. He flared an opposite-field single to right during the ninth that extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Ben Zobrist singled, stole second and scored to put the Rays up 1-0 on Jose Lobaton's RBI single in the fourth. Lobaton was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game. He was out since April 13 due to right shoulder soreness.

Zobrist, playing in right field, took a hit away from A.J. Pierzynski in the second with a diving catch.

Tampa Bay's B.J. Upton went 0 for 4, including three strikeouts against Sale, and had his 10-game winning streak end.

NOTES: White Sox GM Kenny Williams doesn't think LHP John Danks, who is on the 15-day DL with a left shoulder strain, will need a minor league rehab start. Danks could rejoin the rotation around June 5. ... Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria (partial tear left hamstring) increased his agility and running program, and continues taking batting practice and fielding grounders. ... Williams said attendance could impact the White Sox at the trade deadline. "If you can't monetarily make something work, sometimes you have to do it with a greater cost to your talent," Williams said. Chicago is averaging 20,663 this season at home. ... To make room for Lobaton, Tampa Bay optioned C Chris Gimenez to Triple-A Durham.

Bill would require digital textbooks in California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A bill that would require textbook publishers to make the same content available to California school districts in digital format has passed unanimously in the state Senate.

Lawmakers approved SB1154 by Republican Sen. Mimi Walters of Lake Forest on Friday.

Walters says her bill addresses the technology gap between California schools and those in the rest of the country. It also requires publishers to offer their content in sections so districts can buy only the parts they want.

The bill also allows school districts to create online digital textbook databases that students could access from anywhere.

Small publishers with fewer than 100 employees would be exempt from the requirement. The Association of American Publishers is the only listed opponent of the legislation.

California Senate passes bill for self-driving cars

A bill that would allow self-driving cars on California's roads has passed the California Senate.

The bill, SB1298, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), establishes guidelines for "autonomous vehicles" to be tested and operated in California. The bill now goes to the Assembly for consideration next month.

Tech giant Google Inc., Caltech and other organizations have been working to develop such vehicles, which use radar, video cameras and lasers to navigate roads and stay safe in traffic without human assistance. Google Inc. has said that computer-controlled cars should eventually drive more safely than humans.

Padilla said his bill passed Monday without objection.

A number of lawmakers test drove Google's prototype autonomous Prius and "came away convinced that fostering this technology is the right direction for California," he said.

"Human error is the cause of almost every accident on the road today. If autonomous technology can reduce the number of accidents, then we also reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on California's roads," Padilla said. "For me this is a matter of safety."

Padilla added that he believes self-driving cars also will improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles, reduce emissions and enable cars to talk to one another to improve traffic flow.

Self-driving cars must legally have a person at the wheel, ready to assume control if anything goes wrong.

The bill does the following:

?Sets up safety and performance standards for the safe operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads;

?Allows for the operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads by a licensed driver;

?Requires that an autonomous vehicle meets all applicable safety standards and performance requirements in state and federal law;

?Allows the Highway Patrol, in consultation with the Department of Motor Vehicles, to recommend to the Legislature additional requirements for the safe operation of such vehicles on California's roads.

Last year, similar legislation was signed into law in Nevada. In addition, Arizona, Hawaii, Florida and Oklahoma are considering autonomous-vehicle legislation.

(AP) ? Israeli archaeologists have discovered a rare trove of 3,000-year-old jewelry, including a ring and earrings, hidden in a ceramic jug near the ancient city of Megiddo, where the New Testament predicts the final battle of Armageddon.

Archaeologists who unearthed the jug during excavations at the site in 2010 left it in a laboratory while they waited for a molecular analysis of what was inside. When they were finally able to clean it, pieces of gold jewelry ? a ring, earrings, and beads ? dating to around 1100 B.C. poured out.

Israel Finkelstein of Tel Aviv University, who co-directed the dig, said that the find offers a rare glimpse into ancient Canaanite high society. He said the fact that the jewelry was found inside the jug suggested that the owner hid them there.

Finkelstein said the jewelry likely belonged to a Canaanite family.

"We can guess that it was a rich family, probably belonging to the ruling elite," he said.

Tel Aviv University called the trove "among the most valuable ever found from the Biblical period," adding that one piece in particular, a gold earring decorated with molded ibexes, or wild goats, is "without parallel."

It said in a statement this week that the objects were either owned by Egyptians living in the area or inspired by the Egyptian style of the period.

Aren Maeir, an archaeologist at Bar Ilan University, said that because the raw materials used come are not from the area, the find "tells us about international relations ... and about technical traditions used at the time."

Megiddo was an important trade center in ancient times. According to the New Testament, Megiddo will be the site of the final apocalyptic battle between good and evil.

FCC to Public: Is Your Cellphone Carrier ... - mobile apps news

May 25, 2012 by Ina Fried

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday asked the public for comment on whether cellphone carriers need to do a better job of protecting the kinds of information being gathered on modern smartphones.

Shutterstock/P?ter Gudella

One of the agency?s mandates is to make sure that the carriers are securely protecting the information they collect from their customers. For example, phone companies have to protect the databases that store the information on call records and other data.

The question on what steps they must take when it comes to information on devices is a tricker one. The FCC looked into this question back in 2007. At the time, the carriers contended that information stored on phones wasn?t information they were collecting, but rather data being voluntarily entered by consumers.

However, the FCC thinks it might be time to revisit this given revelations last year that there is software, such as that from Carrier IQ, that is preinstalled and collecting information that users are largely unaware of and unable to control.

?Since the Commission last solicited public input on this question five years ago, technologies and business practices have evolved dramatically,? the FCC said in the document seeking comments. ?The devices consumers use to access mobile wireless networks have become more sophisticated and powerful, and their expanded capabilities have at times been used by wireless providers to collect information about particular customers? use of the network ? sometimes, it appears, without informing the customer.?

The FCC isn?t taking issue with the collection of such information, but rather is examining what duties the carriers might have to encrypt or protect such information. Carrier IQ doesn?t encrypt the data it collects, but does store it in a binary format not generally accessible to other applications, the company said.

?We haven?t gone to that extent because we haven?t needed to,? Carrier IQ Vice President Andrew Coward told AllThingsD on Friday. ?If the industry decided we needed to, then we would take that step.?

Carrier IQ is also taking steps to allow customers to see the information that is being collected about them by their software.

Following the comment period, the FCC could decide to, among other things, take no action, clarify its existing rules or propose new rules.

5 ways to master the art of business networking | Africa Report

The key to successful networking is being able to interact with people. Here?s how to walk the walk and talk to the people that matter.

By Craig Falck for Africa Report

1. The number one rule of networking is to be seen.
It doesn?t matter what the event is, make sure that your name is on the invite list and attend. This is the only way to meet people and make contacts within the industry.
2. Mingle as if you?re single.
If you?re going to sit at the bar in the corner, you might as well not be there. You need to talk to other people at events and tell them your name, your business and what it is that you do. First impressions last, so make sure that you give them something they won?t soon forget.
3. Know what you?re talking about.
When it comes to any particular industry, there are a lot of specialists who know a lot about the products and services on offer. Have your facts on hand about your business and goods and give them something to talk about when you explain what sets you apart from the rest.
4. Listen and you will be listened to.
When you?re mingling, listen to what people have to say. This will give you insight into who they are, what they like and where their interests lie. Then, use this to your advantage and bring up a topic that gives you common ground. This will break any ice and help make friends in the biz.
5. Always have business cards on hand.
Not only could you win cool prizes when you enter at the door (most events have lucky draws), but you?ll also be able to hand them out while you?re busy networking. The people you meet now have a way of contacting you, as well as a reminder ? they?ll remember you when they empty their pockets at the office the next morning.

Black workers file charges over noose in locker room

By Martha C. White

Three African-American workers at a Siemens Energy facility in New Jersey have filed charges of discrimination with the?Equal Employment Opportunity Commission?and the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights after they said years of racial harassment recently culminated in their finding a noose hanging in front of their lockers.?

"The complainants ... are pursuing these charges and will be filing a federal lawsuit in the hopes of bringing to light and changing the current climate of open racial discrimination at this facility," Brian K. Wiley, the lawyer representing the employees, said via email.?

In January, four-year Siemens employee David Solomon said he entered the workers' changing area and found a noose hanging "right next to my locker." He photographed the noose and alerted his co-workers, Eddie Clarke and Barry Murphy. In an April 4 affidavit, all three testified that they had seen the noose and detailed numerous other instances of racial discrimination.

"I felt (as)?though a clear?message was being sent to the black employees at Siemens to shut up, do what your [sic] told and stop complaining about being treated unfairly or we would be lynched," Solomon wrote. "Every person in power at my job is white. There are no black supervisors, and no African?-Americans to report this too [sic]."?

Clarke wrote in his statement that he had been physically threatened by his supervisor after voicing complaints about a discriminatory work environment in which African-Americans were denied the opportunity for advancement. "My supervisor had previously?warned me a few years back that if I complained of racial bias in the workplace any further I would get caught in 'friendly fire,' " he wrote. "The?supervisor approached me shortly after and expressed surprise that I was 'still alive.?"

Siemens responded with a statement calling hanging a noose in the workplace a "deplorable, aggressive act" and said the company "promptly notified law enforcement." Company spokeswoman Camille Johnston said via email, "We have been in contact with federal, state and local authorities," without providing details of which agencies.?

In its statement, Siemens said it initiated an internal investigation, which it concluded after?the company's "corporate security team that included members with 30+ years of experience with the Federal Bureau of Investigation ...?could not find any evidence of how the noose got there."

Wiley countered the assertion that Siemens proactively contacted police.

"To be clear, it was the complainants who contacted law enforcement to report what has happened to them," he said. "While we do not have the ability to know whether Siemens contacted law enforcement as they claim, we can say with certainty that none of the three victims was contacted by any law enforcement agency."?

Between 2006 and 2010, the EEOC ordered eight companies to pay a total of nearly $5.2 million stemming from cases of racial discrimination or harassment that involved nooses. The agency's site says it is illegal for race or skin color to impact "hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment."?It also says the display "racially offensive symbols" constitutes illegal racial harrassment.?

"The company is responding to the EEOC charges as appropriate," Johnston said.?An EEOC spokesman declined to comment.

Wiley said no specific amount of damages had been determined for the federal lawsuit he plans to file on behalf of the three men. "There's no real way to quantify" the impact that years ? decades in the case of Murphy, a Siemens employee since 1966 ? worth of denied advancement opportunities and hostile working conditions had on his clients. "[Siemens] conceivably could be responsible for a large amount," he said.
