Top activities for a family adventure holiday in Croatia

If you and the kids love nothing more than jetting off for an?adventurous family holiday, look no further than Croatia. The country has plenty to keep children and adults alike occupied ? to get you in the mood, here are a few activities you can try.

Walking

Croatia is home to some stunning scenery and one of the best ways to fully appreciate it is on foot. If you book a tour like the?family adventure holiday in Croatia?with Explore Worldwide, which starts from ?781 without flights, you can stretch your legs in a gorgeous part of rural Dalmatia.

Your base for the week will be the small hamlet of Litrici, from where you can wander to nearby villages, like Bekavci, and get acquainted with this peaceful corner of Croatia. You?ll have the option of visiting a local house in Litrici too, giving you and the children an opportunity to find out how people here live.

White water rafting

To up the adrenalin levels a bit, spend a day white water rafting on the Cetina River, which is flanked on either side by towering mountains. The rapids on this waterway aren?t rated as being particularly difficult, which makes them ideal for family groups, but you?ll still have plenty of spills and thrills as you negotiate through the whirling sections of water.

In between the rapids, you?ll be drifting at a gentle pace, which gives you the chance to admire the beautiful Dinara Mountains as you paddle. Keep an eye out for caves and waterfalls in the cliffs as you go, too.

Canyoning

Another great activity for a family of water-lovers is canyoning, which sees you enjoy a thrilling tour of the Cetina Gorge. Following an experienced guide, you?ll scramble up and down rocks, jump into deep river pools and splash around under waterfalls as you explore this small section of the river?s route. There are also underground tunnels you can enter and calm lakes that are perfect for swimming. You?ll all sleep well in the evening after spending a day being so active.

Sea kayaking

Croatia is renowned for its stunning coastline, which is dotted with sea caves, quiet coves and calm lagoons, so it would be a shame not to spend some time discovering its many hidden gems.

A sea kayaking excursion is ideal, as it allows you to see the cliffs, bays and caves in all their glory from the water. Several of the beaches on the stretch of coast between Brela and Vrulja on the Markarska Riviera have been awarded Blue Flags for their cleanliness, while there are several interesting landmarks to see as you paddle. Among them are the Brela Stone, which fell from Biokovo Mountain into the sea and is now covered in pine trees, and the stunning sheer cliffs near Vruja. Several freshwater springs can also be found along the coast near Vruja, where the River Cetina bubbles up again having gone underground near Zagora.

Climbing

Not all the activities you can try as a family in Croatia have to revolve around water and you can easily spend a day or two on dry land. The mountains that line the Cetina River are ideal for rock climbing, so you can find out if you have a head for heights by trying to scale some of the cliffs in the area.

If you?ve been on a family holiday to Croatia, are there any activities you?d recommend?
