A Chartreuse Door | DIY Show Off ? ? DIY Decorating and Home ...

Mini-makeover?

When we first installed the sliding door, I embraced it?s original old paint.

interior sliding door

But over the past year, it did feel more ?dirty? even after a good scrubbing than ?charming?. It just reminded me of the cold weather and dirty snow?blah. You can?t tell from the pictures. But it did have that dirty old worn finish.

Remember how my brain sometimes works with DIY? It?s usually a spur of the moment decision that wasn?t in my plan for the day or ever. That happened with painting the sliding door in our dining room.

And remember when I painted the door in the apartment renovation?

apartment door

I fell in looooove with that color. A beautiful happy shade of green.

The beginning of the new year consisted of cleaning and organizing the basement somewhat. I stumbled across packed boxes of supplies and tools from the apartment renovation?still not unpacked since November. While putting things away, looky what I found:

Valspar Gilded Pesto

And just like that, in that five minute time span, I decided to paint the sliding door in the dining room, to add some ?spring? color to the dingy, dirty, neutral white. No wonder it takes me FOREVER to clean. Distractions get me every time.

FrogTape

I started by taping off the glass around the mullions with my favorite stash of FrogTape, making sure the edge of the tape was flush against the corner where wood met glass. It doesn?t leave a sticky residue when removed?and I?m all for making a last minute DIY easier.

{you can see the dirty original paint job better in this picture}

FrogTape on glass

{curtain is for privacy in the guest room or maybe hiding junk in what?s become a storage room?ummm, I?m not telling}

I used my thumb to burnish the edges of the Frogtape to prevent paint from seeping underneath.

burnishing the tape

Then applied to coats of my sample container of paint.

{oops?One coat looked great while wet so I removed tape. I did a second coat on the flat parts after coat 1 was dry}

I removed the tape immediately after the second coat, pulling away from the wood.

What do you think? Do the seasons aid in changing your decor? How finding inspiration and materials that you forgot you had when cleaning and organizing? Either way?I?m loving the new pop of color!

  • paint the built ins and add hardware to the bottom doors
  • swap out the light fixture (wait ?til you see the new one!!!)

First time buyer - Potentially short term - Better ... - Zillow Real Estate ...

Dan provided some excellent links.? Some other things to think about:

There is a lot more to home ownership besides mortgage payments, taxes and insurance.?? You are now responsible for the furnace, air conditioner, plumbing, roof leak and all the other things involved in keeping a structure sound, plus mowing the lawn, weeding the beds etc.

It isn't cheap to sell. Plan on approximately 10% of the cost of the home to sell. ? It also takes time to sell, so if you are relocated you have a anchor around your plans. ? ??? If you were certain you'd be in town for 10+ years, purchasing may be prudent.? Otherwise, the flexibility of renting is great.

In addition, you mention you have low credit.? This also suggests you aren't ready to buy.?? The implications to having his Daddy co-sign are huge.? Now your debt is shown on his credit reports.? If you miss a payment, it shows up on his credit report.?? This isn't something you ask of someone you love (or anyone).?

House buying is not an emergency.?? I'm glad you are thinking through carefully.? Now is a great time to be taking the right steps to improve your credit.?? When you've been successful getting your FICOs scores well above 640, then ask the question again.

Sweet and Spicy BBQ Chicken Dip

sweet and spicy bbq chicken dip1

Living (and working) near a college town means one thing: it doesn?t take you very long to learn how to tailgate and how to tailgate well.

I?ve seen just about everything when it comes to tailgates: satellites in the parking lot, campers parked for days waiting for the game, breakfast and brunch and lunch foods, giant blow up mascots, drinking no matter what time it is, tvs bolted to the backs of trucks, grills that unfold and look more like a transformer than something you cook burgers on.

But when it comes to the food for tailgates, there?s really only one rule: It has to taste good. Some people make seriously complicated foods for tailgates, and some people just throw out veggie trays (not the best tasting food ever, but it works). Okay, maybe there are two rules. Tailgate foods also need to be relatively easy to make and/or eat. Because when you?re drinking all day to get ready for the game, you can?t be worried about cooking an involved dish on the back of your truck or a grill in the parking lot.

Bbq, burgers, pork, sandwiches, chips, dip, and sweets. If you have a few things on that list, you?ll be good.

And just to keep from getting bored, you have to switch up the recipes every week. The serious tailgaters choose their menu based on the team they?re playing, but not everyone is that involved, and that?s totally fine!

If you?re looking for a new dip to serve for the SuperBowl or your tailgate party next year or just because, this Sweet and Spicy BBQ Chicken Dip is our new favorite. Sweet from the apple butter, spicy from the hot sauce and chili powder and paprika. It?s perfect on tortilla or bbq chips and even more delicious used as nacho toppings with scallions, cilantro, and sour cream.

I baked this dip in the oven, but you could definitely throw it in a foil baking dish and cook it right on the grill, too.

Reignite Health and Fitness: Detox - Cleanse

I love the topic of debate: "detox". When we hear the word "detox" we think of the commercially advertised programs consisting of unrealistic claims, expensive powders and days of feeling hungry and deprived. I'm here to tell you that a detox does NOT have to be this way. In my studies I have read many books, two that caught my eye were "Hungry for Change" (James Colquhoun & Laurentine Ten Bosch) and "Clean" (Alejandro Junger). I have "The Gerson Therapy" on my list to read next, but that's a whole other blog!).

Think of detox as a ?reset? for your digestive system. It works so hard everyday; and plays a key role to your body's overall health; sometimes it just needs a little help to clean out and rest. It is great to reduce bloating, discover food intolerances & better yet ? kick food addictions! (by resetting the taste buds)?For example; I love my daily coffee & although coffee has been proven to be beneficial for many things ? my body and mind are addicted to the caffeine. It?s nice to have a rest from it once in a while and put a stop to the reliance on the buzz to ?wake up?. Don't worry, I still love coffee & haven't given it up! (Well, just for this week)

The?cleanse I am doing this week comes from the ?Hungry for Change? book/ DVD. It is not a fast, starvation or fake supplement type detox. It focuses on very clean eating and ensuring your body receives the nutrients it needs. It can be done for 3-7 days. I?m doing it for 5 because I have the house to myself. ?

I admit on day one I really want coffee (it?s Monday, I?m back at work & coffee is very much ingrained into my daily schedule). I also want my morning oats and am craving carbohydrates in the form of wheat. I am a big good carbohydrates eater!?I acknowledge that it is simply my body going through the motions of food cravings. I am not concerned because I know that after 5 days I can eat whatever I want instead of following a specific menu. I also know that after today, the cravings will go away ? this time frame changes for everyone depending on how your diet is already. This is a gentle detox, so the creators recommend starting it on a weekend so you can rest if you feel the need to.

At the end of the detox I expect to feel more energised, less bloated, less reliant on my coffee, uninterested in sugary foods?and experience improved mood.?I will also be even more in tune with my body and what it wants me to feed it - this helps the practise of intuitive eating... but more on that later. I will check back in along the way :)

Happy Monday!

China Mobile says over 60 million TD-SCDMA devices sold in 2012, aiming for twice as many this year

China Mobile says over 60 million TDSCDMA devices sold in 2012, aiming for twice as many this year

At today's Qualcomm QRD Summit in Shenzhen, China Mobile sent its Deputy General Manager of Products Wang Hengjiang to share some hardware stats. In 2012, over 60 million TD-SCDMA devices were sold, with December alone pumping out over seven million units. To put that into perspective, there are now over 220 million 3G phone users in China (as of end of November), meaning the carrier still has plenty of catching up to do as it had a late start in the 3G game. That said, Wang also announced that China Mobile aims to sell twice as many TD-SCDMA devices this year, with smartphones expected to take up over 80 percent of that segment -- hardly a challenge considering they already reached 94.4 percent in the last quarter. Wang added that out of the 120 million units to be sold this year, half of them will be customized by China Mobile -- presumably so that it can choose its own bloatware, right?

As for TD-LTE, China Mobile expects its 4G technology to bloom in China some time between 2014 and 2015, as it continues to help the development of devices that natively support five modes (GSM, TD-SCDMA, UMTS, FD-LTE and TD-LTE) along with 10 to 12 bands. Obviously this is the very reason why China Mobile is getting cosy with Qualcomm, the company who has SoCs that support all these radios. Wang added that ahead of the full launch of TD-LTE, his company will be initiating user trials for TD-LTE data devices and phones throughout 2013 -- the first half of the year for the former, and the second half for the latter. Well, we only have three words for China Mobile: hurry up already!
