Health and Fitness Talk ? Personality Disorders

by Kimberly Allen, RN

Personality disorders are a form of mental illness.? People with personality disorders have difficulty understanding an relating to people and situations.? Approximately 15% of adults in the US are affected by one or more personality disorders.? Some are more common in men than women and vise versa.
The Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of the American Psychiatric Association defines personality disorders as ?an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that differs markedly from the expectations of the individuals culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood,? is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment.?? People that suffer from a personality disorder have extreme difficulty coping with other people. They are usually rigid and inflexible.? They do not deal with the everyday demands and changes in life well.? Most of the time people with a personality disorder believe their patterns of behavior are normal and correct while it?s everyone else that is wrong.? This behavior makes it very difficult for them to participate in social gatherings.personality disorder
So what is a ?personality??? Our personality is the individual behavior styles and patterns that create our individuality and character.? This includes how we think and feel as well as our attitudes how we perceive the world around us.? When people have a healthy personality they are able to handle normal stressors and are able to develop good relationships with their family, friends and co workers.
Our personality develops throughout our childhood and is generally determined by the interaction of two factors, inherited tendencies and environment.? Inherited tendencies are the parts of your personality that you get from your parents like being shy or happy and outgoing, which is called your temperament.? This? is the ?nurture? part of the debate over nurture vs nature.? The environment refers to the surrounding and events that occurred while you were growing up.? It includes the type of relationship you had with your family members as well as others.? Were your parents loving and supportive or abusive?? All these aspects create the ?nurture? part of the debate over nature vs nurture.
The DSM-IV-TR categorizes 10 different personality disorders into three clusters, A, B and C.? Cluster A disorders include paranoid personality disorders, schizoid personality disorder, and schizotypal disorder.? Cluster B disorders include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder.? And cluster C disorders includes avoidant personality disorders, dependent personality disorder and obsessive compulsive disorders.
Personality disorders are conditions that you will need to manage throughout your life.? However, there are some personality disorders that become less intense as you reach middle age and later.? People with personality disorders are at risk for other problems including substance abuse, depression and suicide even homicidal tendencies.? People suffering from personality disorders in cluster B are highly susceptible to impulse control issues, substance abuse and suicidal behavior.? People with one or more personality disorders have a higher chance of developing other psychiatric and mood disorders than the general population.

Kid Rock says Harley deal 'just makes sense'

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Kid Rock says his new partnership with Harley-Davidson is a dream deal, and as the owner of multiple Harley bikes, he didn't feel like he was compromising his integrity or risking a backlash from fans.

The Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker is sponsoring Kid Rock's upcoming tour, named for his most recent release, "Rebel Soul."

The partnership announced Monday also includes an exclusive line of limited-edition, cobranded "Rebel Soul" merchandise featuring a line from the song: "I can't hear you over the rumble of my freedom."

Kid Rock said Tuesday the deal "just makes sense" because Harley is "something I've used that I've loved for a long time before this deal came about."

The tour begins Friday in Kansas City and will end Aug. 31 at Harley's 110th anniversary celebration in Milwaukee.

U.S. soldier who lost four limbs leaves hospital with transplant arms

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - A retired U.S. Army sergeant who underwent a double arm transplant after losing both arms and both legs in Iraq was discharged from The Johns Hopkins Hospital on Tuesday, saying he was anxious to get back to an active life.

Sgt. Brendan Marrocco, 26, of Staten Island, New York, had the successful bilateral arm transplant surgery six weeks ago at the renowned Baltimore hospital.

"I feel like I'm getting a second chance to start over," Marrocco said at a news conference announcing his discharge. "I'm just looking forward to everything I would have wanted to do over the last four years."

Driving, swimming and hand cycling top his list, he said.

A roadside bomb attack in Iraq in 2009 cost him all four limbs.

"I hated having no arms," Marrocco said. "I was alright with having no legs."

Double-arm transplant surgery is rare, and doctors said this was the first such successful procedure to be conducted at Johns Hopkins. Also, officials have said Marrocco is the first U.S. soldier in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to survive losing all four limbs.

W.P. Andrew Lee, the doctor who headed the transplant team, said although the surgery was successful, it will be a few years before Marrocco's nerves regenerate and he regains significant use of his arms.

"The progress will be slow, but the outcome will be rewarding," Lee said.

Dr. Jamie Shores, an assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery and a member of the surgical team, said Marrocco had exceeded doctors' hopes by finding creative ways to use his new limbs despite the medical team's cautious expectations for his mobility at this stage.

"We're the ones holding him back at this point," Shores said.

Marrocco wheeled himself into the news conference, during which he pushed his hair back several times with his left arm. He said his right arm and both hands have little or no feeling or movement.

"We'll get there," Marrocco said. Visibly in high spirits, the war veteran laughed and joked and said a positive attitude and stubborn nature helped sustain him through his ordeal.

"If it really meant something to me, I would go through hell to do it," he said.

Marrocco's family said that besides his pain, he has been upbeat.

"He really hasn't had any low points," said Michael Marrocco, his brother.

Doctors said Marrocco will spend up to six hours a day in physical therapy.

The rare surgery took 13 hours and involved 16 doctors who volunteered from plastic surgery, orthopedics and other disciplines, the hospital said.

It was largely funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, with the remainder of the cost contributed by the hospital, according to Lee.

The Yeshiva World U.S. Appeals Court Shields SEC From Madoff ...

Investors who said they lost money in Bernard Madoff?s fraud may not pursue a lawsuit against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for missing the swindler?s Ponzi scheme, a federal appeals court said on Monday.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California said a federal district judge correctly dismissed their lawsuit seeking to hold the SEC responsible under the Federal Tort Claims Act.

Citing a 2009 report by the regulator?s inspector general, investors led by Dichter-Mad Family Partners LLP in Florida said they would not have invested with Madoff had the regulator availed itself of ?multiple opportunities? to stop the fraud.

They said they instead relied on the regulator?s ?implied stamp of approval? prior to investing, and sought to recover losses they attributed to SEC negligence.

But the 9th Circuit in an unsigned order said the plaintiffs? claims fell within the regulator?s ?discretionary functions,? depriving courts of jurisdiction to hear the appeal.

?I respectfully disagree with the decision, and intend to seek further appellate review,? Richard Gordon, a lawyer who is one of the plaintiffs and argued the appeal, said in a telephone interview.

SEC spokesman John Nester said in an email: ?The decision speaks for itself.?

Monday?s order upheld an April 2010 ruling by U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson in Los Angeles.

In April 2011, a Manhattan federal judge dismissed a similar lawsuit by two other Madoff investors.

An exhaustive August 2009 report by SEC Inspector General David Kotz outlined how the regulator failed to uncover Madoff?s fraud by missing many red flags, disregarding tips, and failing to follow up properly on leads.

Madoff, 74, pleaded guilty in March 2009 and is serving a 150-year prison sentence.

Travel for business: The Mechanics of Business Travel - Part 3

What is a ?fixed? ticket price? Well actually there is no such thing as the cost of a particular ticket usually varies greatly throughout its life. You see a ticket is like any other commodity in that its value gets smaller as its likelihood of sale diminishes. In the case of an air ticket the value hits zero as soon as that aircraft takes off with an empty seat on it. An airline flight seat is more perishable than a bunch of ripe bananas.

It has taken a while but airlines have now recognised this having competed and mainly lost to no frills companies that work on the ?stack them high and sell them cheap? business model. Now you have the most conservative of the major airlines of the world discounting their prices to produce full flights. Everyone is working on the same concept which is to sell their seats at the maximum price they possibly can but shift them nonetheless.

I challenge anyone to run a straw poll on price paid on any airline flight and I can almost guarantee that they would all be different. Much depends on the popularity of the service as the ?rush hour? peak aircraft will always be able to charge a premium for the exclusivity of what they have. If you are flying to Paris on business on a Monday morning there is no point in arriving early afternoon so you, like everyone else in that situation, pays extra to go early and do a full day?s work.

So how do airlines work out their fares? Firstly they look at the trends. They see how that flight did previously going back a considerable distance. They calculated who paid what and when. They identify when they booked and how often people then cancelled. Then they look at how full the aircraft was and what prices people paid who occupied those seats. They learn from this information and build a pricing plan.
The vast majority of airlines invest in ?yield management? as a way of optimising seat usage and making money.

I would say the price of a seat in a particular cabin on an airline can change over 50 times from first being put on the market up to departure time. Get it right and you have a full aircraft and no wastage. Get it wrong too often and you go out of business or need a government bail out!

Everyone knows that only individual private travelers and tourist book and pay early so the prices initially start low. Closer to departure date you get the more thrifty business traveler and those that need to go more suddenly so the price goes up. Three to four days out you have the business traveler. They need flexibility and they have to go so they get hit with the highest fares. The day before, if there are any seats left, they are discounted for the last minute traveler who is looking for cheap deals and can risk being turned away.

This is the sort of basic model that is used today. Within that there are prices for groups booked together, ships crews, tour operators and numerous others. Success or otherwise is measured by filling that last seat however they can, and at the best price for the airline. Most planes are overbooked by airlines as they even gamble on how many folk will turn up on the day. This is especially true when an airline operates different classes as they feel safer overbooking economy seats if they can upgrade any surplus into business class. This happens a lot.

Another method of selling large volumes of seats is through consolidators and wholesalers. These people have a lot of customers and they buy seats at low net prices from airlines for resale to their own market. Airlines get less but they have outsourced the responsibility of selling them to a third party.

How do you get the best ticket price? The only way is to book when others do not. Either early or risk a last minute attempt. It is like a game of chess really, except your competitors employ ?grand masters? to play their pieces!
