52 Weeks To Create - Week 1 The Craft Cabinet ? For the Love of ...

I never intended to regularly blog DIY?s, it just happened by chance.? Over a year ago I posted a tutorial showing how I had made a necklace, just for fun, and within a few weeks and many thousands of page views later, I started thinking of other tutorials I could share with readers.? In a matter of months, I went from blogging about crafts and simple projects I was creating just for fun when I had the time, to purposefully thinking of tutorials that would attract readers and would garner plenty of ?Pins?.? I slowly, but eventually fell into a trap last year where I wasn?t blogging what I created, but creating to blog.? It got me plenty of traffic, but left me feeling tired and anything but creative.? It also left me with very little time to complete the unfinished projects around the house, and freely create anything and everything from simple crafts with my kids, to experimenting with new recipes.? By the end of 2012, I knew I wanted to blog about the things I created in a very different way.

In 2013 I?d like to continue to offer you guys DIY?s, but I?d also like the freedom to blog about the other things we create around these parts.? Sometimes we as bloggers pigeon-hole ourselves into thinking that ?creating? is all tied up in a perfectly styled tutorial, complete with pretty pictures and plenty of pins.? We forget that we have the opportunity, and often do in fact create every day, several times a day.? A freshly organized closet, a twist on a classic family recipe, a simple after school craft project with the kids; these are all ways that we in fact create a life and a home, and memories for our family.? This year I?d like to update the 4 year old family framed photos around the house, finally hang some artwork in our family room, organize a good filing system, craft more with my kids, and yes, create some pretty and unique tutorials to share with you all.? So I?ve set a challenge for myself for this year.? I know that each week I?ll create something, but my challenge is to share with you each week what I?ve created, whether it?s simple and imperfectly styled, shot with my iPhone, and not at all ?Pinterest worthy.?

I have 52 weeks to create a home I feel happy and content in, free of blank walls and outdated pictures staring at me.? I have 52 weeks to get creative in the kitchen and try new recipes.? I have 52 weeks to make messy art with my kids and sit down and spend time with them.? So going forward each Monday I?ll publish a new 52 Weeks To Create post showing how and what I created the week before.? I?m excited and feel that this will be a big part of helping me find the joy in ?craft and DIY? blogging again.

So ready to see what I have been busy creating this last week?? Perfect organization for my craft supplies in my very own craft cabinet, that?s what.? When Hayden took over the office, we were left with zero storage for the very large abundance of arts and craft supplies we own.? In fact everything that was housed in the old office closet including extra blankets and table linens, are all now housed outside in the garage.? Our house does not have a single linen closet.? Our dining room addition does, however, have a huge recess in the wall, so it struck me a while back that it would make the perfect spot for a built-in.? We sat on the idea for the last 2 years and got various quotes and shopped around until we found someone we could trust, recommended by our friend Shelly of VanRozeboom Interiors, and was within our budget.? He completed the cabinet just before Christmas, and we spent the last couple of weeks adding lighting to the upper cabinetsm which saved us $1100 by doing it ourselves, and organizing it so that everything fit just right and made sense.? Apologies in advance for the awkward pictures, as I don?t have a wide enough lens to shoot properly in this small space, but hopefully you get the idea.

The upper cabinet holds all of our china and white party ware.? We wanted wooden shelves as opposed to glass, so we ended up having to add LED lighting under each shelf so the entire cabinet lit up, and we also added lighting underneath the upper so it lights up the serving area.? The lowers consist of solid door cabinets on either side, and 4 nice and large self-closing drawers.? All of the shelves are adjustable.? At this point the overall look is very minimal and clean, and it?s taking me all my might not to want to fill up the uppers with little tchotchkes, or to place crap on the serving area.? I see a horizontal surface and I want to accessorize it, I can?t help it!

While I had storage containers for all of our craft supplies, none of them were cohesive and when placed in the cabinet and drawers, they didn?t make the best use of the space, so I set out to find unison storage containers that would work and be affordable.? After much time shopping around and roaming the aisles of the Container Store, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond, I found our solution in shoe and accessory boxes from the Container Store.? The shoe boxes were $1.89 each, and the smaller accessory boxes were $1.69 each.? They are clear so I can see what is in each box and no need for labels, and the dimensions make the best use of space.? The quality is excellent considering the price.? I used 10 shoe boxes and 4 accessory boxes, making this organization project come in just around $25.

The top drawer holds the majority of my jewelry supplies, including beads, wire and cording, and all my tools that I use on a regular basis. ?The second drawer holds my stash of fabric paints for making all those canvas bags, wrapping supplies including cute bags, washi tape and bakers twine, and a whole box dedicated just to Mod Podge items!The third drawer holds my collection of special pens and markers, and the kid?s stash of markers and crayons, stickers and sparkly things for making crafts.Finally, the bottom drawer holds random items like thread, glue gun, extension cord, Pantone fandecks, and my giant roll of freezer paper to create stencil crafts.The left side cabinet holds my sewing machine and all of my fabric.? My machine had been banished to the garage for the last 6 months, so it?s nice to finally have a place for it so I can finally start sewing again when I have some time.The right cabinet isn?t quite as pretty and organized, but it just holds the kids messy art supplies so I figure it works just fine for now.? Eventually I?d like to get all matching containers, but that?s for another time and budget. Here are close ups of the storage containers.? They?re quite nice for how inexpensive they were, and are by far the most affordable storage option I found.? The smaller acrylic containers pictures on top, which hold my thread and some beads were a bit more expensive, and are also from The Container Store, and were $3.99 and $4.99 each.

So that?s what I was up to this past week. I feel great knowing that all of our supplies are easily accessible and everything has a place.? Organization isn?t necessary for many people to feel creative, but it?s essential for me.? When our supplies are a mess, I?d rather ignore them than even bother digging them out.?? I?m hoping that this project will inspire much more creativity in the coming weeks and months of 2013.

This photo of Wesley standing on top of his desk at the Globe to make a speech after winning the Pulitzer was like a still from what would have been the best movie of the year.

But since lack of space compels us to restrict our conversation to films that actually exist, I?m wondering what you all made of 2012?s bumper crop of movies that aimed to immerse the viewer in hyper-real sensory universes of one kind or another. This is a phenomenon I?ve been thinking about over the last few years, because I want to interrogate my resistance to the technologies I perhaps too often dismiss as so many spatio-perceptual bells and whistles: 3-D, super-high-definition formats like The Hobbit?s 48 frames per second, and even to some degree the extensive use of digitally created images. It isn?t that I don?t think filmmakers can use these innovations in arresting and novel ways. Months after seeing Ang Lee?s Life of Pi, which did remarkable things with 3-D, digital animation, and hi-def, the film?s unusual visual surface is all that sticks with me: I can only describe the image as seeming not only deep but thick, as if the movie were being projected onto a solid cube of clear Jell-O. It was neat-looking, but I?m not sure I need any more of my movies to look that way. Or that I even needed Life of Pi to, really?if anything, the movie?s lavish, hyper-designed look functioned, for me, as a buffer against genuine emotional response.

Then there was the 48fps technology in Peter Jackson?s The Hobbit, which for me and many other viewers turned what might otherwise been an overlong-but-endearing trip deep down the hobbit-hole of Jackson?s Tolkien-loving brain into a two-hour-and-50-minute retinal assault. It may be that higher-frame-rate technology will one day change the way we watch movies, but whatever future marvels we?ll be oohing and aahing at are unlikely to bear much resemblance to the 48fps Hobbit, a movie as ugly as that goblin king with the pendulous neck-goiter who terrorizes the dwarf heroes in its second half. It isn?t just that viewers? eyes are used to watching film advance at the slower 24fps rate (which, I know, was itself arbitrarily chosen). It?s that lighting designers, costumers, actors, and everyone behind the scenes creating the illusion are all used to working within that format as well, and their tricks are all scaled to that medium. At least in this movie?s case, the effect of jamming twice as much visual information into each frame was to continuously remind the viewer of a piece of meta-visual information she might rather not spend a fantasy film thinking about: that everything we were seeing was taking place on a series of wildly expensive film sets somewhere in New Zealand, with guys in dwarf costumes under a hot lighting rig worrying about the longevity of their beards? spirit gum.

It?s an inevitability that the gods will exact retribution for what I just wrote by making the 48fps format the next big thing starting in 2013. (I?m imagining a trend of higher-frame-rate conversions of Hollywood classics: The Wizard of Oz, now with visible latex seams on the Scarecrow?s headpiece!) I swear I?m not being a Luddite for Ned Ludd?s sake here; if anything, I?m eager for a big technological breakthrough to come along and make my eyeballs pop out of my head cartoon-style, the way Avatar, for all its storytelling shortcomings, did a few years back. But maybe it?s just that the most magical digital effects this year took place on a smaller, less aggressively ?immersive? scale: The matter-of-fact digital removal of Marion Cotillard?s lower legs for the amputee character she played in the gritty, heart-swelling French romance Rust and Bone, or that freaky motion-captured erotic encounter between Denis Lavant and an impossibly lithe female acrobat in L?os Carax?s deliciously bizarre masterwork Holy Motors.

Wife says poisoned lottery winner had no enemies

CHICAGO (AP) ? The wife of a Chicago lottery winner who was poisoned with cyanide said Tuesday she was devastated by his death and cannot believe her husband could have had enemies.

Shabana Ansari spoke to The Associated Press a day after news emerged that 46-year-old Urooj Khan's death in July was the result of cyanide poisoning and not natural causes, as authorities initially concluded. Prosecutors, Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating Khan's death as a homicide, but they have not given any details, announced any suspects or said whether they believed the lottery win could have presented a motive.

Ansari would not talk about the circumstances of her husband's death, saying it was too painful to recall. She said only that he fell ill shortly after they had dinner together.

She described Khan as a hard-working and generous man who would send money to orphanages in their native India.

"I was shattered. I can't believe he's no longer with me," the short, soft-spoken Ansari said tearfully, standing in one of three dry-cleaning businesses her husband started after immigrating to the U.S. from India in 1989.

Khan's death on July 20 was initially ruled a result of natural causes. But a relative's request for a deeper look resulted in the startling conclusion months later that Kahn was killed with the poison as he was about to collect $425,000 in winnings. Authorities won't identify the relative. Ansari, who said she has spoken with police detectives about the case, said she was not the one who asked for a deeper investigation and that she doesn't know who it was.

"I don't think anyone would have a bad eye for him or that he had any enemy," said Ansari, adding that she continues to work at the dry cleaner out of a desire to honor her husband and protect the businesses he built.

Khan planned to use the lottery winnings to pay off mortgages, expand his business and give a donation to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Ansari said her husband did not have a will and the money is now tied up in probate.

She said she hopes the truth of what happened to her husband will come out. She said she could not recall anyone unusual or suspicious coming into their lives after the lottery win became public.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters Tuesday that he had never seen anything like Khan's case in his 32 years of policing in New York, New Jersey and now Chicago.

"So, I'm not going to say that I've seen everything," McCarthy said.

Authorities plan to exhume Khan's body in the next few weeks in hopes they might be able to test additional tissue samples and bolster evidence if the case goes to trial.

"It's always good if and when the case goes to trial to have as much data as possible," said Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina. He added that he did not believe additional testing would change the conclusion that Khan was a homicide victim, saying those comprehensive toxicology results were validated in the lab.

"Based on the investigative information we have now and the (toxicology results), we're comfortable where we are right now," he said.

Ansari, 32, moved to the U.S. from India after marrying Khan 12 years ago.

Khan and his wife were born in Hyderabad, a city in southern India, and their story is a typical immigrant's tale of settling in a new land with big dreams and starting a business. Their daughter, Jasmeen, now 17, is a student here.

"Work was his passion," Ansari said of her husband, adding that she plans to stay in the U.S. and keep his businesses running.

"I'm just taking care of his hard work," she said.

She recalled going on the hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, with her husband in 2010, an awe-inspiring trip that was a first for both of them. One of Islam's pillars requires every able-bodied Muslim to make the journey at least once in their lifetime.

She said her husband returned even more set on living a good life and stopped buying the occasional lottery ticket.

Nonetheless, he couldn't resist buying one for an instant lottery game in June while at a 7-Eleven near his home in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the city's north side. It was a $1 million winner.

Khan opted for a lump sum of slightly more than $600,000. After taxes, the winnings amounted to about $425,000, said lottery spokesman Mike Lang. The check was issued on July 19, the day before Khan died.

Some other states allow winners to remain anonymous, but Illinois requires most winning ticket holders to appear for a news conference and related promotions, partly to prove that the state pays out prizes. Khan's win didn't draw much media attention, and Lang noted that press events for $1 million winners are fairly typical.

"We do several news conferences a month for various amounts," he said.

Genetic link between epilepsy and migraine

Jan. 7, 2013 ? New research reveals a shared genetic susceptibility to epilepsy and migraine. Findings published in Epilepsia, a journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), indicate that having a strong family history of seizure disorders increases the chance of having migraine with aura (MA).

Medical evidence has established that migraine and epilepsy often co-occur in patients; this co-occurrence is called "comorbidity." Previous studies have found that people with epilepsy are substantially more likely than the general population to have migraine headache. However, it is not clear whether that comorbidity results from a shared genetic cause.

"Epilepsy and migraine are each individually influenced by genetic factors," explains lead author Dr. Melodie Winawer from Columbia University Medical Center in New York. "Our study is the first to confirm a shared genetic susceptibility to epilepsy and migraine in a large population of patients with common forms of epilepsy."

For the present study, Dr. Winawer and colleagues analyzed data collected from participants in the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project (EPGP) -- a genetic study of epilepsy patients and families from 27 clinical centers in the U.S., Canada, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. The study examined one aspect of EPGP: sibling and parent-child pairs with focal epilepsy or generalized epilepsy of unknown cause. Most people with epilepsy have no family members affected with epilepsy. EPGP was designed to look at those rare families with more than one individual with epilepsy, in order to increase the chance of finding genetic causes of epilepsy.

Analysis of 730 participants with epilepsy from 501 families demonstrated that the prevalence of MA -- when additional symptoms, such as blind spots or flashing lights, occur prior to the headache pain -- was substantially increased when there were several individuals in the family with seizure disorders. EPGP study participants with epilepsy who had three or more additional close relatives with a seizure disorder were more than twice as likely to experience MA than patients from families with fewer individuals with seizures. In other words, the stronger the genetic effect on epilepsy in the family, the higher the rates of MA. This result provides evidence that a gene or genes exist that cause both epilepsy and migraine.

Identification of genetic contributions to the comorbidity of epilepsy with other disorders, like migraine, has implications for epilepsy patients. Prior research has shown that coexisting conditions impact the quality of life, treatment success, and mortality of epilepsy patients, with some experts suggesting that these comorbidities may have a greater impact on patients than the seizures themselves. In fact, comorbid conditions are emphasized in the National Institutes of Health Epilepsy Research Benchmarks and in a recent report on epilepsy from the Institute of Medicine.

"Our study demonstrates a strong genetic basis for migraine and epilepsy, because the rate of migraine is increased only in people who have close (rather than distant) relatives with epilepsy and only when three or more family members are affected," concludes Dr. Winawer. "Further investigation of the genetics of groups of comorbid disorders and epilepsy will help to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these comorbidities, and enhance the quality of life for those with epilepsy."
