New Jersey Governor pledges to vote Romney despite plug for Obama

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie defended his praise for President Barack Obama's support after superstorm Sandy, but said he would stick with his Republican ticket and vote for Mitt Romney in this Tuesday's election.

"The fact of the matter is what New Jerseyans expect from their governor is to work for them, not to work for any particular political party," Christie told Israel's Channel 2 television in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

"I'm a Republican and I have endorsed Mitt Romney, I support him and I intend to vote for him on Tuesday," said Christie, interviewed in his home state by a visiting Israeli television reporter.

Christie, a popular governor widely seen as a possible Republican contender in 2016, had frustrated some in the Romney campaign who feared he had given what could be a critical boost to Obama, a Democrat.

He referred to Obama's pledge of federal aid during a visit to help New Jersey recover from the storm that knocked out power to some 2.4 million of its residents and said:

"If the president of United States comes here and he's willing to help my people and he does it then I'm gonna say nice things about him because he's earned it."

Obama "provided help to my people at one of the worst crises that this state has ever faced," Christie added. "When somebody does a good job, they deserve credit."

"Anybody who is upset in the Republican Party about this, they haven't been to New Jersey. Come see the destruction, come see the loss."

Outdoor News Daily ? Blog Archive ? Let's Go Fishing Seeks ...

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department?s ?Let?s Go Fishing? program is in need of avid anglers looking to give back to their community and share their love of the great sport of fishing. The program is currently seeking volunteer instructors to teach ice fishing, fly fishing or basic fishing to youth and adults.

Registration has opened for instructor training sessions, which are a requirement for becoming certified as a Let?s Go Fishing instructor. Training is free. To sign up you must print out and return a Let?s Go Fishing volunteer application form, which can be found on the Fish and Game website at http://www.fishnh.com/Fishing/lets_go_fishing_volunteers.htm or request by calling 603-271-3212 or emailing aquatic-ed@wildlife.nh.gov. Applications must be received by Wednesday, November 21, to reserve your spot in the trainings.

Those being certified must attend both an overview training session and at least one specialty training class. The overview session will cover the ins and outs of the N.H. Fish and Game Department and the Let?s Go Fishing program, as well teaching practices and principles. The specialty sessions focus on the specific programs presented ? ice fishing, fly fishing, or basic fishing; these are hands-on experiences where prospective instructors are put through an abbreviated ?real life? Let?s Go Fishing course. Topics covered include ethics, pond ecology, rules and regulations, equipment and safety. Instructors must attend the specialty training session for each course topic they wish to teach.

The Let?s Go Fishing program will hold the first half of the two-part certification training for new fishing instructors on Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Owl Brook Hunter Education Center, 387 Perch Pond Road, Holderness N.H. Lunch is provided. This class is required for all new instructors.

All instructors also must attend the second half of the certification training for the specific type of course they will be teaching, as listed below. These training sessions take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Owl Brook Hunter Education Center, 387 Perch Pond Road, Holderness N.H. Lunch is provided.

* Basic Fishing: Sunday, December 2, 2012 * Ice Fishing: Saturday, January 12, 2013 * Fly Fishing: Sunday, January 13, 2013

After completing the training, participants have the chance to join an existing team of volunteer fishing instructors who present programs across the state. The Let?s Go Fishing program also offers: saltwater fishing, fly tying and saltwater fly fishing.

Thousands of children and adults have learned to be safe, ethical and successful anglers through the Let?s Go Fishing program. The program is federally funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Program ? a true user-pay, user-benefit program.

US stocks rise on strong economic data

It's only been a day, but November on Wall Street is already looking a lot better than October.

Strong economic data and corporate news converged Thursday to give U.S. stocks their best day since mid-September. Positive signs about the job market and higher auto and retail sales reports pushed stock futures up before the market opened. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 100 points the first half hour of trading. At 10, two more strong reports came out and pushed the Dow up as much as 177 points. It fell back some, but held a steady gain for the rest of the day.

The Dow closed up 136.16 points, or 1 percent, at 13,232.62. It was the best day since Sept. 13.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 15.43 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,427.59. The Nasdaq composite index added 42.83, or 1.4 percent, to 3,020.06.

All three indexes fell in October, their first monthly losses since May.

The 10 a.m. surge came after the Institute for Supply Management said factories are seeing more orders and increased production. The index has shown growth for the first two months of this quarter, an encouraging sign about the health of corporate America. Before that, manufacturing had decreased for three straight months.

The Conference Board said Americans' confidence in the economy surged last month to the highest level in nearly five years. Many were encouraged by an improving job market, the group said.

Traders watch manufacturing and consumer confidence because factories and consumers are crucial players in the economic recovery. Manufacturing lifted America out of recession, and the resurgent car industry has supported the economy during recent periods of weakness. Consumers, meanwhile, account for about 70 percent of economic activity. If they're not confident enough to spend, no one else has the buying power to take up the slack.

Manufacturing growth tends to signal higher corporate earnings, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. U.S. companies are midway through reporting their third-quarter earnings, which have been relatively weak. If factories keep boosting their output, Cote said, earnings are more likely to bounce back this quarter.

"What you want to see is advancing corporate profits, broad manufacturing growth and strong consumer spending," Cote said. Cote said those factors set the tone for the market.

Before trading began, the government said applications for unemployment benefits fell 9,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 363,000, a level consistent with modest hiring. Separately, payroll provider ADP said businesses added 158,000 jobs in October, more than economists had expected.

Another major piece of economic news comes out at 8:30 a.m. Friday, the Labor Department's October jobs report. That report will be watched closely by traders to see how well the U.S. economy is recovering. If the number is especially good or bad, it also could influence the outcome of next week's presidential election.

It was the second day of trading after Superstorm Sandy ravaged New York and forced markets to close on Monday and Tuesday. Companies that had postponed earnings announcements rushed to release their results.

Thursday's upswing started with strong sales results from retailers and automakers. Chrysler had its best October in five years, with sales rising 10 percent, despite the three-day disruption caused by the storm.

Exxon Mobil beat the financial expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet, but reported lower production of oil and gas. Its stock rose 43 cents to $91.60.

Kellogg Co.'s net income edged up in the third quarter as its acquisition of Pringles chips earlier this year paid off. Kellogg leapt $1.18, or 2.3 percent, to $53.50.

Pfizer said its third-quarter profit fell 14 percent on plunging sales, mainly due to new competition from generic forms of Lipitor, long the world's top-selling drug. Pfizer fell 32 cents to $24.55.

Doctors Don?t Know Who Can Get IUDs, Study Finds

Doctors are misinformed about which women can receive one type of birth control, a new study suggests.

Researchers surveyed health care providers at family planning clinics in Colorado and Iowa, finding that only about half of the providers said they considered Paraguard and Mirena, types of intrauterine devices (IUDs), safe and reliable for preventing pregnancy in women who had just had babies.

In addition, about 30 percent of respondents said these IUDs were not safe for women who had just had abortions.

These views conflict with new recommendations from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which said last year that almost all women, including those who have recently had a baby or abortion, can safely receive IUDs.

Moreover, health care providers at family planning clinics are likely more informed about IUD use than the average doctor. Therefore, the misconceptions among doctors in general could be even more widespread, said study researcher Claire Brindis, a director of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

For patients, the message is: know the facts about IUDs, Brindis said. Women should discuss their level of comfort with inserting IUDs with their doctors, and those women who want this kind of birth control should find a doctor who is willing to perform the procedure.

For many women, IUDs may be more effective at preventing pregnancy than are birth control pills. A study published in May in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who used birth control pills, skin patches or vaginal rings were 20 times more likely to get pregnant over a three-year period than women who used IUDs or implants.

The devices do carry risks, however; women who currently have pelvic infections or get them frequently should not use the devices. ParaGard, which is a copper, hormone-free device, has been associated with heavy bleeding, severe cramping and vaginal inflammation. Mirena, which releases small amounts of a synthetic progestin hormone, may be associated with hormonal side effects, such as acne, weight gain or mood changes. Neither device protects against sexually transmitted infections.

But some doctors may have concerns that an IUD could tear the uterus of a woman who has just had a baby or an abortion; the latest science does not support these worries, however, Brindis said. Changes since the devices first appeared may contribute to the misunderstanding, she said. Doctors who received their medical training many years ago may be less informed about today's IUDs, or may associate IUDs with the stigma attached to the devices in the 1970s, when one IUD called the Dalkon Shield was linked with bacterial infections of the uterus, Brindis said.

In the new study, Brindis and colleagues analyzed information from 273 doctors, doctor's assistants, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and registered nurses. Participants filled out surveys in 2010 and 2012. During that period, family planning agencies had pushed to increase education about IUDs among health care providers in Iowa and Colorado, where they survey occurred.

That education has helped somewhat ? the percentage of doctors who said IUDs were safe and reliable for postpartum women increased from 37 percent to 50 percent over the two-year period. But there is still a lot of room for improvement, Brindis said.

"We still have a long way to go to have a wide acceptance," Brindis said. IUDs are often considered a "last resort" for birth control, but there is no need to view them this way, she said.

For a woman with insurance, an IUD costs about $500 ? more expensive than a single payment for birth control pills. But over the long-term, an IUD that lasts five or 10 years can cost less than many months of pill prescriptions, Brindis said.

The study was presented this week at the American Public Health Association meeting in San Francisco. It was conducted in collaboration with Ashley Philliber and colleagues at Philliber Research Associates, an independent research and evaluation firm in Accord, N.Y.

Pass it on: Almost all women are eligible for IUDs.

Italian Homophobia Study Reveals High Level Of Discrimination, Prejudice In Rome

  • New York

From Scott G. Brown aka Gene Brown, a member and participant of the 1969 Stonewall Inn raid and riots: "My ailing health has prevented me from making this 1,200 mile trip by Bus for next week's Pride Parade, but I can, truthfully, say that I was there in June 2011."

  • Washington, D.C.

From Ashley Bartolome: "I took these photos at the Pride Parade in Washington, DC on June 9, 2012." What I love about pride is not only seeing but feeling the acceptance of everyone there. Gays, lesbians, heterosexuals and families attend every year supporting with cheers and smiles. I make it a point to attend pride every year not just for myself, but to give a voice and be a face for all LGBT people who can't speak up due to their closets or fears. I want to show them that it's ok to be who they are and there are countless Americans who accept them. I also like to be there out of respect for the LGBT who have been killed by others - or by their own hands - because of their sexuality.

  • Sao Paulo, Brazil

From Welton Trindade, journalist and a gay activist: "I took part of Sao Paulo LGBT Parade. The march was realized on Sunday, June 10. That was the 16th edition of the event. Well, I wanted to show my body but a parade, in my opinion, is not just fun! So I've decided to show my muscles and, in the same time, to send a good message. The solution: to write 'Poder gay' (or 'Gay power') on my chest! It was a great experience!"

My friend Courtney had one of them speechless by the end of their conversation not by throwing obscenities his way but rather using her knowledge of scripture. • Athens, Greece

From gay superhero: "I didn't manage to be at the parade from the beginning, but that gave me the chance to find myself at the head of the march later, as they were going up Stadiou street. This is a central Athens street that saw a lot of disturbances during recent protests, including the death of three bank employees when their building caught fire.
