To be honest, I've been avoiding Trayvon's story. Growing up in Philadelphia, you constantly feel endangered as a black male. The knowledge that one mistake or dumb move can lead to jail or death is beaten into your head the moment puberty begins. Back home on the East Coast, it's not strange for there to be a news story every night about a black man going to jail for a crime. Forgive me, but I just was not eager to hear about another young death.

But it didn't go away. Trayvon didn't become another story on the news. Thanks in part to the unfortunate circumstances that led to his death, the story swept the nation, and I become inundated with the horrific account of a 17-year-old boy who was shot to death by an overzealous neighborhood watchman less than a few feet from his house, with nothing on him but a couple of snacks. The Sanford police call it self-defense, while almost everyone else calls it killing.

As I went from website to website, reading various statements, listening to commentary and gut-wrenching 911 calls, I couldn't help thinking about who had a hand in covering this story. Of course, there was the always-reliable Big Three, with ABC breaking quite a few leads; there was CNN, and fantastic MSNBC, thanks in part to Rev. Al Sharpton, Melissa Harris-Perry, and even Rachel Maddow. FOX.com, while leaving the story off its main page, and of course coming from a place of worry that freedom to bear arms was being threatened, at least covered it. What was missing were the gay media outlets.

OUT.com? Nothing. Advocate.com? Zilch. Queerty? Nada. Maybe this crossed my mind because I am black and gay, but I saw the connection so clearly. Am I the only one who sees young-minority-plagued-because-of-how-society-sees-him-tragically-loses-his-life? Trayvon's case is galvanizing the nation. In my mind, Treyvon is no different from Lawrence King or Tyler Clementi. All three died because of hatred and ignorance, and I think these sad events that have rocked the black community and reminded us how far we still need to go generate a feeling the gay community should know all too well.

It has become the go-to rhetoric for gay progressives and advocates to compare the battle for gay marriage and LGBT equality with the civil rights movement. It's a fair and easy assertion to make, but to talk about this connection and not give further voice or even action when members of both communities are affected is a missed opportunity. What happened to Trayvon Martin is gay news. I am a gay man, and it affects my life. Moreover, as LGBT people, we have to be aware that Trayvon is not one isolated case but a continuation of a death narrative that both black and gay people suffer from and should work to overcome together.

Amid chaos of uprising, crime wave hits Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Streets of Damascus that were crowded until late at night stand mostly empty after sunset as Syrians stay home, fearing robberies and kidnapping. After a year of chaos, a country that once boasted it was the safest in the Middle East is experiencing a surge in crime.

Reports of thefts, armed robberies and house break-ins have swelled, an apparent sign of criminals taking advantage of the turmoil as the regime of President Bashar Assad wages a bloody, nationwide crackdown against an opposition demanding his ouster.

The government blames members of the opposition or army defectors for much of the crime. The opposition, in turn, blames the regime, saying it is allowing the lawlessness so it can tell the public that the uprising has brought chaos.

But it may be that security forces are now too distracted. Syria's 17 security and intelligence agencies used to control the country with an iron fist, and crime was rare as many feared the regime's brutality. Several pardons issued by Assad over the past year as a gesture to the opposition are believed to have freed criminals ? including convicted murderers and thieves ? alongside some political prisoners.

Whatever the cause, Damascus residents say criminals are operating with unprecedented boldness.

A woman who lives in the posh Damascus neighborhood of Tijara recounted a harrowing armed robbery against her family that she said took place earlier this month. At 6 in the evening, three gunmen with automatic weapons banged on their apartment door while her mother and 8-year-old brother were home alone. The brother opened the door and the assailants stormed in, she told The Associated Press by phone from the Syrian capital.

The gunmen held a gun to the boy's head and told the mother they would shoot unless she handed over her jewelry and cash, the woman said. Her mother gave them all her jewelry and cash worth about $30,000. The gunmen forced the mother and son into a bedroom, tied their hands, locked them in and then fled, said the woman.

"This is the first such case in this neighborhood in 15 years," she said the police told her. The woman spoke on condition of anonymity for fear the criminals might harm members of her family.

Another Damascus resident said a neighbor ? a wealthy, pro-government businessman in his late 40s ? was kidnapped while going to work and was only released after his family paid a ransom worth $300,000. After the December kidnapping the man left Syria along with his wife and children. The resident also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of making herself a target.

In the central city of Homs, a resident told the AP that gunmen knocked on the door of his neighbor, put a pistol in his face and said to him, "Give us the keys of your car."

The man said the gunmen drove away. The Homs resident, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said his neighbor still lives in fear.

Damascus residents say that many people who own luxury cars keep them at home and move around in taxis in order for them not to have their cars stolen.

Homs resident Wael, 27, said crime has doubled in some restive neighborhoods because "there is no security and people are now behaving as they want."

"In the past, we used to sleep with our windows open. Now, we cannot do that," said Wael, who asked that he only be identified with his first name.

Iyad al-Bunni, 58, a merchant from Damascus, said the absence of stability and security has allowed thieves to thrive. "Armed groups are using the security vacuum to carry out acts of looting," he said.

Pinning down the extent of the rise in crime is difficult, in part because of the potential for violence connected to the uprising and the regime's crackdown to get mixed in with nonpolitical crime. The regime denies the existence of an uprising, saying it faces not a popular revolt but violence from "terrorists" ? so it likely includes deaths connected to political violence in its crime rate.

The revolt began a year ago with peaceful protests against Assad around the country that were met with gunfire.

Since then, violence has spiraled. Some rebels have taken up arms, attacking army positions and reportedly gunning down pro-regime figures. Security forces have besieged entire cities or rebellious neighborhoods, hammering residential areas with artillery. Pro-regime militiamen known as Shabiha have targeted suspected opposition supporters. Tit-for-tat sectarian killings have taken place between majority Sunnis, who largely back the opposition, and minority Alawites, who stand by the regime.

The United Nations estimates that 8,000 people have been killed in the violence surrounding the uprising.

The Damascus general prosecutor, Marwan Louji, told the pro-government daily Baladana in January that "political, terrorist and normal" crime in the capital doubled in 2011 compared to the previous year. He said theft shot up between 50 to 100 percent. He did not otherwise elaborate.

It was not clear whether his figures included deaths connected to the uprising and crackdown or not. Louji refused an AP request to be interviewed by telephone, and Syrian security officials refused comment.

Louji told Baladana that authorities will work on making sentences harsher in an attempt to reduce crime rates. He gave an example that if a crime is usually punished with a prison sentence ranging between 3 to 15 years in jail, judges will give the maximum punishment.

Mustafa Osso, a Syria-based activist and lawyer who defends political prisoners, blamed the regime for the crimes in order to show that it must stay in power for Syria to be stable.

"They want to say that we either stay in power or fear and chaos will spread in the country," Osso said. "The regime is helping in the rise of crime rates. They released criminals serving long sentences, we are talking about dangerous criminals who committed major crimes."

Financier Allen Stanford loses bid for new trial

The financier Allen Stanford on Thursday lost his bid for a new trial, 16 days after being convicted for running an estimated $7 billion Ponzi scheme.

District Judge David Hittner in Houston turned down Stanford's request for a new trial in a brief order, without explaining his reasons.

Stanford, who turns 62 on Saturday, was convicted on March 6 by a Houston federal jury on 13 of 14 counts related to what prosecutors said was the sale of bogus certificates of deposit from his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank Ltd.

Carnie Wilson has gone under the?knife again in an effort to lose weight, as People magazine is reporting that the singer had lap-band surgery on Jan. 18.

Wilson lost 150 pounds after gastric bypass surgery 12 years ago, People reports, and has shed 30 pounds so far this time.

"It was the right decision for me and I'm doing really well so far," Wilson tells People. "It's all about taking good care of myself."

Wilson told the magazine in 2010 that having children -- daughters Lola, 6, and Luciana, 2 -- "derailed" her a bit and?that she has struggled to lose post-pregnancy pounds.

Gastric bypass reduces the size of the stomach and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. In the?lap-band procedure, a silicone band is placed around the stomach to create a pouch the size of a golf ball.

Wilson has a new album and new reality show coming with?Wilson Phillips in April.

Cardinals knock off top-seeded Spartans 57-44

PHOENIX (AP) ? Louisville figured its game against Michigan State to be low-scoring, a natural expectation with two of the nation's best defenses butting heads.

The Cardinals had one big advantage: Gorgui Dieng.

Dominating inside, Dieng blocked seven shots and altered several others to anchor a stifling defense that helped Louisville knock off top-seeded Michigan State 57-44 Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals.

"''He was very disruptive," Michigan State's Draymond Green said. "We're not going to back down from anyone. We took it at him. He pulled off some great blocked shots. That's what he does. That's his strength."

The Cardinals (29-9) relied on 3-point shooting in the first half and moved inside in the second to befuddle the Spartans.

Their defense gave Michigan State fits all night.

Instead of trapping like it normally does, Louisville played a bait-and-switch game with the Spartans and Green, their multitalented forward. The idea was to jump out on screens and to make the Spartans work on every possession and, hopefully, wear them out.

It worked, in large part because Dieng was in the back to clean things up.

Tent-pole thin when he arrived at Louisville, the Senegalese center worked hard on his body and his game, developing into the one player the Cardinals had to have on the floor during his sophomore season. When he got in foul trouble, Louisville labored, so one of the key parts of coach Rick Pitino's game plan was to make sure the Cardinals protected him.

They did and he protected the rim in return, getting five of his blocked shots in the second half to prevent Michigan State from mounting any kind of rally. The Cardinals move on to the West final against Marquette or Florida on Saturday.

"When we came here, we know (what) we're going to face," said Dieng, who also had five points, nine rebounds and three steals while matching the school record for blocked shots in an NCAA tournament game. "We knew we were going to come to a war. We need to be tougher than them to win this game."

Michigan State (29-8) started slow and never got going against Louisville's amoebic defense.

The Spartans got shots they wanted and usually make, but couldn't get many to fall against Dieng or anyone else, shooting 28 percent while being outscored 20-14 inside by the leaner Cardinals.

Green had 13 points and 16 rebounds in his final game for Michigan State. Brandon Wood added 14 points for the Spartans, who were outscored 17-4 off the bench.

"They disrupted us a little bit and we didn't have enough guys who could play well," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said.

This sweet matchup of top programs featured two of college basketball's best short-preparation coaches.

Pitino has used his speed-the-opponent-up system to reach the Final Four five times, becoming the first coach to lead three different schools to the national semifinals. Once past the NCAA tournament's first week, he's had a knack for guiding his team further along the bracket, going 10-0 in the regional semifinals.

Izzo has spent his 17 years at Michigan State building teams that can handle the rigors of the Big Ten or switch to greyhound mode when the opponent plays fast. He's been as consistent as any coach in the game, leading the Spartans to the Final Four six times, including the 2000 national title, and 10 trips to the regionals round the past 15 years.

Izzo played the right hand the last time these two basketball brains met, taking the Spartans to the 2009 Final Four after they found a way to break Louisville's pressure.

Pitino had something up his sleeve this time.

With Michigan State bogging the game down, the Cardinals struggled early, missing 12 of their first 13 shots. They snapped out of it by hitting 3s.

Russ Smith hit a pair, Jared Swopshire and Chris Smith each dropped one in and, even Dieng ? 0 for 2 in his career previously ? got one to go in.

Swopshire closed it out with a 3 from the corner to put the Cardinals up 23-18 at halftime. Louisville was 7 of 15 from the arc in the half, but got almost nothing inside, hitting 1 of 15 shots from two-point range.

"Our game plan was to cut off the paint," Izzo said. "I thought we did actually a very good job of that. And yet they hit some 3's."

Louisville shifted gears to open the second half, getting two layups and a dunk to keep its cushion. Swopshire followed with an alley-oop to Siva for the point guard's first points, then stole the inbound pass to set up two free throws by Russ Smith that put the Cardinals up 35-25.

Michigan State managed a short run to get within four, but Louisville used its pressure to get a couple of steals and baskets to go up 43-32. Dieng followed with a couple more swats ? one on Keith Appling that sailed into the stands ? to keep the Spartans at arm's length.

"He played an exceptional game," Pitino said.

Good enough to get Louisville into the regional final for the third time in six years, a trip to New Orleans and the Final Four within its sights.

Establishment starts to coalesce behind Romney

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Republican establishment started to coalesce around Mitt Romney in earnest on Wednesday, with Jeb Bush and other leading Republicans pressuring Rick Santorum to leave the race after a thumping in the Illinois primary.

But, on what should have been a triumphant day, Romney found himself having to defend his conservative credentials anew after one of his own top advisers, Eric Fehrnstrom, remarked that "everything changes" for the fall campaign. "It's almost like an Etch A Sketch," he said. "You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again."

The remark fueled criticism that Romney molds his principles to fit with political goals. Democrats pounced, and by day's end his GOP opponents were waving the draw, shake and erase toys at campaign events in Louisiana.

"The issues I'm running on will be exactly the same," the former Massachusetts governor said in Arbutus, Md., as Republicans and Democrats alike mocked him. "I'm running as a conservative Republican. I was a conservative governor. I will be running as a conservative Republican nominee ? hopefully, nominee at that point. The policies and the positions are the same."

It all nearly overshadowed the endorsement from Bush, the son of one president and the brother of another. He had stayed out of the race for months, and some party elders publicly had urged him to become a candidate as Romney struggled to close the deal with the conservative base of the party.

Bush refused, and on Wednesday he made his preference in the race known after Romney's double-digit Illinois victory.

"Now is the time for Republicans to unite behind Gov. Romney and take our message of fiscal conservatism and job creation to all voters this fall," Bush said in a written statement. He congratulated the other Republican candidates "for a hard-fought, thoughtful debate and primary season."

His backing comes amid fresh signs that big GOP donors and other party figures will follow Bush's lead after sitting on the sidelines for much of the primary season. Romney is on pace to win the nomination in June. He has 563 delegates in the overall count maintained by The Associated Press, out of 1,144 needed to win the party nod. Santorum has 263 delegates, Newt Gingrich 135 and Ron Paul 50.

Hours after Bush weighed in, Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader and a longtime Romney supporter, suggested that Santorum must decide soon whether to stay in or surrender his bid for the nomination.

"Rick, I think, he's got a real problem," Dole, who became the GOP nominee in 1996 on his third try, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It's getting close to the point where he's got to take a hard look at it."

At the same time, campaign finance reports released Tuesday showed that big donors to a GOP political organization founded by political strategist Karl Rove have boosted their financial support for Romney in recent weeks.

Bush's support came as a surprise to the Romney campaign. The former Florida governor personally contacted Romney Wednesday morning to say he planned to make the endorsement.

Romney made one quick public appearance in Maryland on Wednesday ahead of the April 3 primary there. He planned to spend much of Thursday personally courting members of Congress and other officials in Washington.

But the Etch A Sketch remark threatened to dog him.

It happened early Wednesday on CNN when Fehrnstrom was asked if the extended primary fight "might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election."

Fehrnstrom responded: "I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again." The aide didn't back away from the comment when asked to clarify it. He said only that the general election is "a different race, with different candidates, and the main issue now becomes" exclusively President Barack Obama.

It didn't take long for the Democratic National Committee and Romney's Republican rivals to seize on the remark.

In Louisiana, Santorum brandished an Etch A Sketch and told voters he is a candidate who stands "firmly on the rocks of freedom, not on the sands of an Etch A Sketch toy."

Gingrich stood on stage elsewhere in the state and explained to his audience just what the toys were. "Gov. Romney's staff, they don't even have the decency to wait until they get the nomination to explain to us how they'll sell us out," he said. "I think having an Etch A Sketch as your campaign model raises every doubt about where we're going."

Louisiana holds its primary Saturday. Santorum is favored in the state, though Romney's allies are airing TV ads there even though the South has proven less hospitable to Romney.

Beyond Saturday, polls show Romney has the advantage heading toward Maryland's April 3 primary.

For his part, Obama on Wednesday headed to Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma on a trip aimed at answering critics of his energy policies, sure to be a key issue in the fall campaign. His first stop was a plant in Nevada that uses solar panels to power homes, part of an effort to highlight his programs to expand renewable energy sources.

The president's GOP critics poked back at Obama before Air Force One even took off.

Gingrich issued a statement saying Obama was answering a real-world problem with a "solution that is totally disconnected from the practical realities of the world and has little chance of success." Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit arm of a Republican super PAC, launched an ad on TV stations in the areas on Obama's itinerary and on national cable channels faulting the president for "bad energy policies" that are driving up gasoline prices.
