Second rice shipment to Japan leaves central Taiwan

A shipment of Taiwanese rice bound for Tokyo departed central Taiwan yesterday, the second in a series of three deliveries of the biggest rice order received from Japan in eight years.

A ceremony was held in Changhua County?s Pitou Township (??), where the rice supplier, Union Rice Co, is based, to mark the shipment and the success of Changhua rice in entering Japan?s market.

The rice is being delivered to major Japanese rice importer Kitoku Shinryo Co, which ordered 360 tonnes earlier this year, the largest purchase of rice since exports to Japan were resumed in October 2004.

The rice will be distributed directly to Japanese retailers, the first time Taiwanese rice will be sold to Japanese consumers. In the past, it was mostly sold to wholesalers supplying restaurants or food processors.

Agriculture and Food Agency Director Li Tsang-lang (???) said rice exports have long been constrained by high costs of production, which make Taiwanese rice more expensive than that grown in the US, Thailand and Australia.

Kitoku Shinryo decided to place an order due to the high quality of Taiwan?s rice, he said.

?After the rice passed all tests, they placed an order with us. The success represents positive recognition of the quality of Taiwanese rice and the technology used to process it,? Li said.

The Council of Agriculture said rice exported to Japan must pass 591 pesticide residue tests before being given the green light.

Makoto Hirayama, president of Kitoku Shinryo Co, visited Taiwan last month to inspect paddy fields, barns and processing plants and tasted the rice himself before placing the order.

The order has been partly motivated by the food shortages faced in Japan recently. Radiation contamination of farms from the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant and flooding in Niigata, a famous rice production district, have combined to limit Japan?s food output, the council said.

The council was confident that Japanese importers would continue to order rice from Taiwan even after the shortages pass because of the high quality of Taiwanese rice.

Yesterday?s shipment, like the first one, weighed 108 tonnes, with the rice packed in 30kg bags. Upon arrival in Tokyo it was to be repacked before being distributed.

Bucaaneers coach Raheem Morris: 'I'll never fire myself'

TAMPA, Fla. ? Coach Raheem Morris sees a bright future for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and believes he should be a part of it.

Morris' job could be in jeopardy as Tampa Bay (4-11), one year after going 10-6, will try and stop a nine-game skid in Sunday's regular-season finale at Atlanta.

"I think I answered this question a couple weeks ago ... I will never fire myself," Morris said Monday, two days after the Bucs were beaten 48-16 at Carolina. "You don't go from being a coach of a year candidate to being the worst coach in the league to get fired within a year. It's about us. It's a little bit of everything."

Tampa Bay has turned over the ball 36 times and allowed 449 points this season. What has been the most frustrating part for Morris has been a recent stretch of one-sided losses.

"No question ... bingo," Morris said. "But it happens because people go outside of the box and try to make plays that are just not there in order to get that football team, or basketball team, or hockey team to win. You've got to go play within the system and make the plays that technique and opportunity allow you to make. Once you got those things, it's just like the year before."

This year's struggles have not dampened Morris' view on the Bucs' youth movement.

"We made a collective agreement to go young when we took over this program," Morris said. "That's something we wanted to do. I believe in my guys. I believe in the system. I believe in the program. I believe in what we do. We want to build this thing young, and want to develop a team that goes out and wins, and wins consistently."

Morris said this year's deficiencies can be addressed during the upcoming offseason.

"We've got a chance to work on some of the fine details, some of the stuff we may have missed from last year," Morris said. "This year we'll have an offseason. This year we'll have a chance to be with them. This year we'll have great examples on how to lose games, and we'll have great examples on how to win games because we have the last two seasons to look at."

"Last year, this same team won 10 games, now through a little bit of smoke and mirrors so to speak, but that's not the point," Morris added. "You've got a chance to get better this offseason. You've got a chance to come out here and get an offseason and get these guys together. We're not a finished product, but you don't have to be a finished product in order to win. We proved that last year."

Iran rejects U.S. allegation on al Qaeda operative (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran rejected as "completely baseless" U.S. allegations that it was harboring an al Qaeda member who is accused of operating as a facilitator and financier for the group from the Islamic Republic, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Sunday.

The United States announced Thursday that it was establishing a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to Syrian-born Yasin al-Suri, who is also known as Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil.

"The American government's recent unwise scenario regarding Iran's involvement in the September 11, 2001 attacks and the presence of an al Qaeda member in Iran is completely baseless," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Sunday, according to Fars.

Al-Suri has been accused of helping move money and recruits through Iran to al Qaeda leaders in neighboring countries under an agreement between the group and the Iranian government, Senior State Department official Robert Hartung has said.

The $10 million bounty was the first offered for an al Qaeda financier and is aimed at disrupting a financial network that has operated from within Iran's borders since 2005, the Treasury Department said.

Friday a federal district court in Manhattan ruled that Iran and Hezbollah materially and directly supported al Qaeda in the September 11, 2001 attacks and are legally responsible for damages to hundreds of family members of 9/11 victims who are plaintiffs in the case.

"The world should consider the consequences of such irresponsible behavior by American officials ... It is also necessary that the international community shows its deep concerns to the American government," Mehmanparast said.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called the September 11 attacks on the United States a "big fabrication" by Washington that was used to justify the U.S. war on terrorism.

The United States and its Western allies have been locked in a standoff with Iran over its disputed nuclear program, which Washington believes is aimed at producing nuclear weapons but which Tehran says is solely for peaceful purposes.

Boxer Mayweather gets 90 jail days in Vegas case (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a perfect 42-0 in the ring and has dodged significant jail time several times in domestic violence cases in Las Vegas and Michigan.

But his courtroom streak came to an end Wednesday when a Las Vegas judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges.

The case stemmed from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris while two of their children watched in September 2010.

"Punishment is appropriate," Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa said after a prosecutor complained that Mayweather has been in trouble before and hasn't faced serious consequences.

"No matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they escalate to this level of violence," she said.

Good behavior could knock several weeks off Mayweather's sentence. but he will likely serve most of the sentence set to begin Jan. 6, said Officer Bill Cassell, a Las Vegas police spokesman.

Mayweather and his manager, Leonard Ellerbe, declined comment outside the courtroom.

The jail time raises doubts about a possible showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a champion fighter from the Philippines against whom Mayweather's welterweight success is usually measured.

A long-awaited fight between the two men regarded as among the best of their generation has been delayed by stalling techniques and verbal sparring.

The two men have a defamation lawsuit pending in Las Vegas federal court stemming from statements by Mayweather that he suspects Pacquiao was taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Mayweather returned in September from a 16-month layoff to continue his undefeated record with a controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas.

Mayweather's promoters have a May 5 date reserved against an as-yet unnamed opponent at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. But if Mayweather is jailed until the end of March, it could cut into the usual eight-plus weeks he takes to train.

Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said licenses for all fighters expire on Saturday, and most, including Mayweather, have yet to reapply for next year.

He said Mayweather would be asked on his license application if he was convicted of any misdemeanors or felonies.

Kizer said commissioners would then decide whether to approve or deny his license or hold a hearing to talk about it. The commission has been in contact with prosecutors and Mayweather's lawyers as cases against him have progressed, he said.

"The commissioners are definitely up to speed on it and will be when it comes time to consider any kind of application," he said.

Lee Samuels, a spokesman for Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank and Bob Arum, declined comment on Mayweather's sentencing and its possible effect on a match.

Mayweather, 34, stood still in a striped olive vest and showed no reaction as the judge sentenced him to six months in the Clark County jail then suspended half the term.

She gave him credit for three days previously served in jail and ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service, pay a $2,500 fine and complete a yearlong domestic violence counseling program.

The plea deal avoided trial on felony and misdemeanor that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in state prison if he was convicted on all counts.

Mayweather also is expected to plead no contest next week to a separate misdemeanor harassment charge involving a 21-year-old homeowner association security guard who was poked in the face during an argument about parking tickets placed on cars outside Mayweather's house.

Mayweather's lawyer, Karen Winckler, said she may appeal what she called the unusual sentence handed down Wednesday.

In court, she called Mayweather "a champion in many areas" and aired a list of his good deeds, including buying toys for children for Christmas and promising to donate $100,000 to breast cancer research by the end of December.

Winckler argued that the public would benefit more if Mayweather performed 100 hours of community service with children.

Mayweather is also on the hook for 40 hours of community service with the Las Vegas Habitat for Humanity Project under a South Carolina federal judge's order for dodging a deposition in a music rights lawsuit.

Mayweather has a Jan. 31 deadline on that court order. Habitat for Humanity official Catherine Barnes said Wednesday that Mayweather had not started to log the hours.

Saragosa said Wednesday she was persuaded to jail Mayweather following his admission that he hit Harris and twisted her arm, and that two of their children, ages 9 and 10, witnessed the attack.

Mayweather threatened to kill or make Harris "disappear," Saragosa said, and their 10-year-old son ran from the house and jumped a back gate to fetch security. Mayweather had taken cellphones belonging to Harris and the two boys.

"Things could have gotten more out of hand than they did," the judge said.

Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich cited three previous domestic violence arrests for scuffles involving Harris, with whom Mayweather has three children, and three cases involving another woman with whom Mayweather has one child.

Fines were of no consequence to Mayweather, Luzaich said.

Mayweather goes by the nickname "Money," and was guaranteed $25 million for the Ortiz fight that won him the WBC's welterweight belt. Mayweather earned more than $20 million in a previous fight against "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Mayweather has been arrested several times since 2002 in battery and violence cases in Las Vegas and in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich.

He was convicted in 2002 of misdemeanor battery stemming from a fight with two women at a Las Vegas nightclub. He received a suspended one-year jail sentence and was ordered to undergo impulse-control counseling.

He was fined in Grand Rapids in February 2005 and ordered to perform community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery for a bar fight.

He was acquitted by a Nevada jury in July 2005 after being accused of hitting and kicking Harris during an argument outside a Las Vegas nightclub.

He was acquitted again in October of misdemeanor allegations that he threatened two homeowner association security guards during a parking ticket argument.

Mayweather also faces a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas from two men who allege he orchestrated a shooting attack on them outside a skating rink in 2009. Police have never accused Mayweather of firing shots and he has never been criminally charged in the case.

Limit Cold Medications During Pregnancy, Experts Advise (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- It's prudent to limit the use of over-the-counter cold and flu medications during pregnancy, experts say.

This is because some medications may contain substances that are potentially harmful to developing fetuses, or that have not been well-studied for use in pregnant women.

"Every year around this time, we get a significant number of calls from pregnant and breast-feeding women in California who are battling colds and are worried about which meds they can and can't take," said Christina Chambers, professor of pediatrics at University of California, San Diego and program director at the California Teratogen Information Service.

To help expectant mothers who are sick this holiday season, Chambers offered these cold medicine safety tips:

  • Take as little as possible. Over-the-counter cold remedies could contain up to six ingredients for a wide array of symptoms, such as a cough, runny nose or headache. Choose medications that contain just the ingredients you need for your specific symptoms.
  • Avoid oral decongestants in early pregnancy. When taken during the first trimester, these medications have been linked to a slightly heightened risk of abdominal wall defects in fetuses. Saline drops or nasal sprays may be good short-term alternatives.
  • Be cautious about herbal ingredients. Many over-the-counter medications may contain herbal ingredients that have not been evaluated for use during pregnancy.
  • Don't overdo it with lozenges. These drops may soothe a sore throat but they often contain mostly sugar. Lozenges may also contain zinc and vitamin C, which should be taken only in limited daily doses (80 to 100 milligrams per day for vitamin C and 11 milligrams per day for zinc) during pregnancy.
  • Choose alcohol-free cough syrups. Opt for cough remedies that do not contain alcohol.

Investigators work at the scene of a murder/suicide in the small town of Emington, south of Dwight, Illinois Friday night Dec. 16, 2011. Five people, including a baby and two children, were found shot to death Friday at the home in the small eastern Illinois farming town, authorities said, and police said they were not searching for a gunman. (AP Photo/Nicholas Holstein - Daily Journal)

(AP) ? A burst of gunfire sent Annelise Fiedler running out of her home to see what the noise was. In the yard next door, she saw 30-year-old Sara McMeen hovering over her baby as if she had dropped her. Fiedler asked McMeen if everything was all right.

"She looked at me and said, 'No, everything is not all right,'" Fiedler told The Associated Press.

Then, Fiedler said, McMeen shot the baby. Fiedler fled for her life.

While authorities in the small Illinois farming community remained tight-lipped Saturday about the details of what they said was a murder-suicide that left five people dead, neighbors described shocking violence that took place outside, in full view of their homes. Some could see two of the children's bodies from their windows.

The dead included McMeen, her 29-year-old live-in boyfriend, Daniel Warren, and her three children, 8-year-old Skyler Lemke, 7-year-old Ian Lemke and 10-month-old Maggie Warren, authorities said.

Livingston County Sheriff Martin Meredith would not identify the shooter or disclose a possible motive for the shootings, which happened about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

A school bus had dropped off Skyler and Ian Lemke, along with several of their friends, moments earlier, neighbors said. The children were excited because it was the last day of school before Christmas break, said Ronald Groetsema, whose 12-year-old son was also on the bus.

From his home one street away, Groetsema heard an initial round of six to eight gunshots. A few minutes of silence passed. Then, he heard four to six shots more.

Dave Melton rushed home after getting a frantic call from his wife, who could see McMeen's backyard from her window.

"The kids are dead," she told him.

On Saturday, Melton stood in front of his home and pointed at the yard that backs up to his. A day earlier, he saw Ian Lemke's body on the step leading into the neighboring house and McMeen's and Skyler's bodies about 10 feet away.

"I stood here for a while, like, 'This ain't happening,'" he said.

All five were pronounced dead at the scene. Meredith said investigators found a semi-automatic pistol there, but wouldn't say exactly where.

In a statement issued by authorities, Cynthia McMeen, Sara McMeen's mother, said family members "grieved over the loss of their loved ones."

"They realize this tragedy ... affects not only their family, but other families as well," she said in the statement. "The family is drawing together during this time, relying on God, and grieving."

Neighbors said McMeen and her family had moved recently to Emington, a speck of a town about a half-mile long with just 117 residents. Surrounded by miles of farmland covered in frost, it's a place where "you drive 15 miles in any direction to get to anywhere else," Pastor Pam Gansch-Boythe said.

The family rented a home that, according to longtime resident Bob Young, was known as the "banker's house" before the town bank closed years ago. A woman who said her brother-in-law now owned it declined to comment when reached by telephone.

Meredith said the two older children attended school in nearby Saunemin, where Skyler was in second grade and Ian was in first grade. The children were well-known in the neighborhood, but the adults were not.

Fiedler said she had heard a man and woman fighting next door three times over the past few months. She said the couple kept "very much to themselves."

Melton said he had spoken to McMeen "just a little bit," usually when he was in his own backyard.

About 30 people gathered in an Emington church Saturday morning to pray and try to understand what happened. Some residents said they had moved from larger towns to find a safe, quiet place to raise their families.

Beth Barcikowski, who lives across the street from McMeen's house, said her children used to play with the Lemkes. Skyler would come to their home before and after getting on the school bus, Barcikowski said.

She's haunted by the idea that the little girl was shot just as she arrived home from school.

"Just wishing she would've come here first," Barcikowski said.

London Stock Exchange buys Pearson out of FTSE for ?450m

The London Stock Exchange has signed a definitive agreement to pay Pearson ?450 million in cash to buy the 50% stake in FTSE International that it does not already own.

The acquisition of FTSE diversifies the exchange's business into indices, data and analytics and, in particular, creates new growth opportunities for its listed derivatives trading business, a strategic priority. It will increase access to buy-side firms and services and will offer an enhanced global footprint, including key emerging and growth markets, the exchange said in a statement.

Since it was established in 1995 as a joint venture between the LSE and Financial Times Group, part of the Pearson organisation, FTSE has grown rapidly and now offers a broad and international suite of products and services. The company has a diversified revenue mix, with approximately 60% of total revenues generated from recurring data subscriptions and the remainder derived from licence fees from asset managers.

Intel and LG deal brings WiDi streaming to HDTVs without the dongle

Intel's Wireless Display tech has promised to pull together properly equipped laptops and nearby HDTV screens since its debut last year, but until now always required an extra add-on for the TV side of the equation. That will change next year, thanks to an agreement by the chipmaker with LG promising its Cinema 3D Smart TV line will be the first ones with WiDi built right in. Just like it does with existing dongles, compatible devices can stream content (including HDCP protected video like DVDs and Blu-rays, as of Sandy Bridge) to the display while displaying something different on their own screen, and don't require an active WiFi or internet setup to make it all happen. The press release (included after the break) promises demonstrations next month at CES, while some manufacturers like Philips have included similar technology, we'll see if this becomes a standard feature.
